HE101 Microeconomic Principles

This course gives students a basic grasp of economic theory as well as the ability to apply economic principles to real-world problems. The course addresses the decision-making of small economic units - consumers, firms and markets. Topics covered include cost-benefit principles, opportunity cost, laws and elasticity of demand and supply, utility maximization, the concept of the margin, indifference curves, profit maximization, market equilibrium and efficiency, market structure, market failure, public choice, externalities and property rights, the economics of public policy and of public goods.


HE102 Macroeconomic Principles

This course exposes students to a basic understanding of the workings of the economy as a whole. The topics covered include measures of the GNP; inflation and unemployment; economic growth; the general product market; the 'Keynesian cross' model; the general money market, the creation of money; the role of central bank and of the financial institutions; the basic IS-LM model; aggregate demand and aggregate supply; open economy macroeconomics that includes capital flows and the balance of trade.


HE103 Basic Mathematics for Economists

This course is designed for students who do not have the necessary background in mathematics. Students will be taught mathematical techniques that are useful for economic analysis at both the elementary and the intermediate level. Topics covered include functions, derivatives and partial derivatives, optimization with or without constraints, integration, simple differential equations and simple difference equations, matrix algebra.


HE104B Introduction to Probability and Statistical Inference

AUs: 3, Prerequisites: NIL, Semester 2
This course provides a statistical foundation for students to pursue further courses in econometrics and statistics. A standard calculus course would provide adequate mathematical background. The course emphasizes fundamental concepts and presents them in a logical order. Topics covered include probability; distributions and densities; mathematical expectations; functions of random variables; sampling distributions; estimation and hypotheses testing for means, variances and proportions.


HE201 Intermediate Microeconomics

AUs: 4, Prerequisites: HE101 or AB106 or HE191, Semester 2
This is an intermmediate course on microeconomic theory for economic majors. It covers some important contents in microeconomic theory and basic economic modeling. Economic concepts are analysed in a rigorous manner, thus laying the foundation for economic majors to pursue advanced microeconomic theory. Students who did not take HE103 Basic Mathematics for Economists should have at least GCE A-level C mathematics or equivalent.

CV2101 Mechanics of Materials

AUs: 4, Prerequisites: NIL, Semester 1
This course covers both the statics of particles and rigid bodies and basic topics on the mechanics of materials. The principal topics are statics of particles, equilibrium of rigid body, analysis of simple trusses and beams, analysis and design of structural members subjected to tension, compression, torsion, and bending, including such fundamental concepts as stress, strain, and elastic behaviour. Other topics of general interest are the transformation of stress and strain, combined loading and the stability of columns.


CV2102 Structures I

Bar forces in simple, compound and complex trusses. Bending moment, shear and axial forces of beams and frames. Principle of superposition. Principle of virtual work. Energy theorems. Displacements of elastic determinate structures: geometric methods, principle of virtual work, energy theorems.


CV2301 Soil Mechanics

Soil formation and composition. Physical properties of soils: clay minerals and soil structure, soil indices, soil classification. Soil compaction. Water in soils and seepage: permeability, one-dimensional flow. Stress in soil: effective stress concept, Mohr circle. Compressibility and consolidation of soils: oedometer tests, preconsolidation stress, compression indices and settlement calculation, Terzaghi’s one-dimensional consolidation theory, pore pressure dissipation and degree of consolidation. CV2302 Geotechnical Engineering

HE202 Intermediate Macroeconomics

AUs: 4, Prerequisites: HE102 or AB106 or HE191, Semester 1
The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the theoretical foundations of macroeconomics at an intermmediate level. The course covers (a) the major macroeconomic markets: goods, money, and labor markets, and their constituent functions including the consumption function, saving function, investment function, money-demand function, the determinants of money supply, etc; (b) macroeconomic models: IS/LM/AD/AS in closed and open economics, and the Phillips curve; (c) macroeconomic stabilization and macroeconomic policies; and (d) introduction to growth theory.


HE204B Principles of Econometrics

AUs: 4, Prerequisites: HE104B or MAS215 or MAS315, Semester 1
This course offers students in economics and other social sciences a firm foundation in the theory and methods of econometrics. The course teaches students the main tools of estimation and inference. Applications of econometric techniques will be illustrated by empirical examples based on economic analysis. Students will be given hands-on experience through computer lab sessions.The course begins with a thorough analysis of the simple linear regression model. It covers the estimation and hypothesis testing of regression coefficients, goodness-of-fit and prediction. The model is then extended to the multiple regression framework. Further topics such as diagnostic checking, functional forms, restricted estimation, dummy variables and structural change are discussed. In addition, the course provides an introduction to nonlinear models, models for panel data, and the matrix approach to the GLM.

CV3101 Structures II

This course embraces classical and modern methods for the analysis of statically indeterminate structures. Principal topics are the force method using consistent deformation and conservation of energy. Deformation of indeterminate structures and the method of influence lines are taught. Displacement technique involving slope-defl ection equations and moment distribution approach are introduced for structures with/without sway. A mini-project involving fabrication and testing is included and where the appreciation of the computer as an analysis tool is encouraged.


CV3201 Reinforced Concrete Design

AUs: 3, Prerequisites: CV2102, Semester 1
In this course, students will learn to understand the behavior of simple reinforced concrete structures and how to design them. The course, which builds on existing knowledge of engineering materials, analysis and design from previous courses, is split into two parts. In the first part, an understanding of how steel and concrete work together to resist forces will be developed. Methods for estimating the ultimate strength, deflection of slabs, beams and columns subjected to various combinations of flexure, shear and axial load will be developed. The second part of the course uses understanding of the strengths of members developed to design members in a simple structure. A realistic framed structure will be designed and detailed as part of a design project.

This course develops an understanding of Limit State Design as applied to structural steel members and connections based on British Standard Code of Practice BS5950.

CV3301 Foundation Engineering

Evaluation of soil parameters for foundation design. Shallow foundation: bearing capacity and settlement. Deep foundation: pile types, axial and lateral capacity, and load tests. Retaining walls: gravity walls, embedded walls and braced excavation systems.

HE312 Political Economy of East Asia

AUs: 4, Prerequisites: HE191 or HE101 or HE102 or HE192 or AB106, Semester 1
The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the political economy of the region. The course covers recent economic development in East Asia, especially Singapore. It examines government-business relationship, foreign direct investment and trade flows, macroeconomic management and the transitional economies in East Asia. Issues relating to regional integration, the World Trade Organization, capital flows, the international financial system, demography and dependency will also be examined. Special attention will be given to problems and prospects of economic development in Southeast Asian countries.

MT3401 Industrial Immersion

Training attachments of 10 weeks for the B.Sc. (Maritime Studies) and 12 weeks for the B.Sc. (Maritime Studies with Business Major) covering practical aspects of the maritime industry. Students will not only acquire real-life work experience but also interact with professionals in the working environment, setting up valuable contacts necessary to give them an edge in the working world upon graduation. The attachment is supervised by a tutor each from industry and the university.


BC206 Financial Analytics and Reporting

The course aims to equip students with fundamental concepts of spreadsheet modeling to develop efficient analysis and reporting solutions. Students will be exposed to modeling and programming concepts using tools such as Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (Macro). The course will be useful as students learn how to design business reports to support management analysis. Through hands-on lab sessions, students will learn how to organize data, develop spreadsheet models, design user-friendly reports and automate repetitive tasks.

BH331 Cultural Intelligence at Work

The global economy ushers in many opportunities as well as challenges for organisations and their business leaders. Amongst the many issues brought about by globalisation, managing people from different cultures is perhaps one of the most critical. Cultural diversity is a double-edge sword – whether organisations achieve a competitive advantage through cultural synergies, or be crippled by cross-cultural misunderstandings, depends largely on how well organisational members understand, respect, and manage cultural diversity.

The overall aim of this course is to equip students with theories and skills that will be relevant to them in today’s global environment, both for the purposes of better managing cross-cultural interactions, as well as for enhancing personal development. Students should, at the end of the course, be able to:

  1. Articulate the basic frameworks for describing cultural variations;
  2. Apply these cultural frameworks to understand how and why organisational behaviours (e.g. negotiation, motivation, leadership) may differ across cultures, and to offer recommendations on ways to better manage cultural barriers in these areas;
  3. Appreciate the challenges of global work assignments, and the methods for selecting and preparing employees for such assignments;
  4. Understand the dilemmas of cultural diversity from an organisational perspective, and ways to enhance cultural synergies and,
  5. Develop an awareness of their sensitivity and intelligence related to, and a respect for, cross-cultural interactions).

These objectives will be achieved through discussions of theoretical and empirical readings, analyses of cases, and applications to current international management issues. In addition, a battery of psychological tests and exercises will be administered to foster students’ awareness of their personal inclination toward cross-cultural interactions. Much of the learning in this course occurs through CRITICAL THINKING and active student involvement. Hence, the class should be open to sharing of experiences, opinions and ideas, as well as to critiquing of theories.
