Admissions

Admission requirements

Research programmes

(a) Minimum entry qualifications for admission

Master’s programme

A bachelor’s degree with honours at least at second class upper level and the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.

Doctor of Philosophy programme

A bachelor’s degree, master’s degree (research-based) and the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.

(b) Required Test Scores

For International students

A good TOEFL* score taken within two years from the date of application (for applicants whose mother tongue is not English)

A very good GRE* test score (if applying for Engineering, Communication and Information Studies, Economics, Psychology, Sociology or Science). Applicants from India may use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score of at least 90% in place of GRE.

A good GMAT or GRE score (if applying for Business/Accountancy)

*Note: Please submit a photocopy of the test score with your application. Official ETS test scores are not required in the first instance.

For local students

A GMAT or GRE score is required if you are applying for the PhD programmes of the Business, Accountancy, Economics, Psychology and Sociology disciplines. Applicants (except NTU/ NUS graduates) applying for the School of Communication and Information must submit valid GRE scores.

Students may be admitted as:

(1) Research students in the first instance with the student expected to be confirmed as a PhD candidate [abbreviation: Research Student (Ph.D.)]. This category is also open to applicants without a master’s degree; or

(2) Research students in the first instance with the student expected to be confirmed as a master’s candidate; students of sufficient promise may pursue a PhD subject to the scope of the project. [abbreviation: Research Student (Master’s with PhD option)]

The University is taking in more PhD candidates and fewer Master’s students. Candidates who have obtained only a bachelor’s degree can be offered admission as (1) or (2) above.

Coursework programmes

Applicants must possess at least a good bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

TOEFL is a requirement for admission to some coursework programmes for those who graduated from a university where English was not the medium of instruction. Required scores range from 570 to 650 (paper-based) or 230 to 280 (computer-based). An equivalent IELTS score is acceptable in lieu of TOEFL.
