Student Achievement

  • Kuek Hong Wee, graduating student, won the Merit Award in the prestigious Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor’s Award, an annual event organized by Tan Kah Kee Foundation and National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) to promote creativity in science and technology among the young in Singapore. His award-winning work on 3D computer vision uses structured light principle and a unique technique of geometric calculation to generate realistic 3D images of measured objects.
  • A follow-up project on G-Cam, a portable network-enabled 3D-image capturing device by a team of undergraduates led by Dr. Perry Shum, won the year’s championship in the Inter-Tertiary I-Innovations Competitions. G-Cam is a digital camera with built-in micro-projector for projecting a light beam of grating lines with known geometry onto an object. Using the computer vision technique developed earlier, the 3D-image of the object can be easily generated for different applications such as e-shopping, security authentication, 3D gaming etc. Members of the team include Lai Wenn Jing, Tian Cher Chye, Loh Weng Chung and Kuek Hong Wee.
  • An In-House-Practical Training (IHPT) team known as “Blue Solution“ has made NTRC proud of its excellent achievement. This team not only won the IHPT Technopreneurship Competition but also emerged champion in NTU 20th Anniversary Technopreneurship Competition for conceiving the Best Business Plan. The team demonstrated applications through various real-time usages of Bluetooth technology. They built their own in-house built Bluetooth transceiver, Bluetooth-enabled micro-controller board and HCI stack, followed by a whole range of possible wireless communicating interfaces such as Linux-to-Linux communication, PCMCIA interface, etc. Their innovative work attracted media attention and was given coverage by the press on July 22, 2001.
