The growing importance of communication and computer networks in business prompted NTU to establish in November 1991 the Network Technology Research Centre (NTRC) or NTRC in partnership with Digital Equipment Singapore Pte Ltd (which became part of Compaq Computer Asia Pte Ltd since 1998).The establishment of NTRC within NTU provides a focal point for coordinating and deploying NTU's academic and research staff with interest and expertise in communications and computer networking.
Local companies that lack the resources to undertake research and development independently can participate in collaborative research programmes with NTRC. It allows the local industry to exploit new technologies using the facilities and human resources in NTRC without having to commit a large development fund up-front. For NTRC, the industrial projects provide challenges to its researchers with mission-oriented and purposeful research. The pursuit of challenging industrial projects by NTRC is part of NTU's goal to be the industry's university.
