Ujung Karang- Epilogue

JESSICA LIM (Text & Pictures)

It has been many months since the waves crashed upon shores in Asia, completely devastating towns and people's lives.

Across countries around the South Indian Ocean, people are picking up the pieces of their lives and trying to move on - as the rest of the world already has.

But in Ujung Karang, time stands still.

Yes, the rubble has been cleared off the roads, the air sweet and no longer tainted by the stench of rotting bodies, furniture scavanged and brought away.

But the atmosphere is thick with the memory of that day. Everything lying here has been caressed by the waves that killed so many. And so while the rest of Meulaboh, Indonesia, hurries on to remove the traces of the tragedy, at least one little beach remains untouched. And maybe it should remain so - some things are best not forgotten.
