The RSIS Centre for NTS Studies and IAR, UBC, will be organising the 2014 ASEAN-Canada Forum on ‘Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Growth’ on 24–25 July 2014. Supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, the Forum seeks to not only showcase the work of the ASEAN-Canada research fellows, but also provide a platform to share reflections and facilitate a candid conversation on ASEAN’s community building efforts, particularly in light of the goal of establishing the ASEAN Community in 2015. This would be in line with the objective of the ASEAN-Canada Enhanced Partnership Plan of Action which states that ASEAN and Canada are to “work and consult closely in responding to regional and international challenges, and in building an ASEAN-centred regional architecture which is open and inclusive, promote the development of enhanced ASEAN connectivity which will help foster the building of an ASEAN Community by 2015”.
In promoting the ASEAN Community, discussions will include addressing the issue of natural resources management and sustainable development, which are critical components of greater regional integration and strong economic growth. It will also explore issues of mitigating the impact of natural disasters, conflict and competition over natural resources, as well as regional mechanisms for managing challenges to sustainable growth and promoting regional cooperation.
This Forum forms part of activities conducted under the 2012-15 ASEAN-Canada Research Partnership. The RSIS Centre for NTS Studies is the Coordinator and Secretariat of this initiative.
