Margarita Escaler
Dr Margarita Escaler is Research Fellow at the Graduate Programmes and Research Office of the National Institute of Education (NIE); and Adjunct Research Fellow (food security) at the Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
A biotechnologist by training, she obtained her undergraduate degree from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, UK in 1995. She then continued her studies at a post-graduate level at the John Innes Centre, Norwich, where she obtained her PhD from the Department of Plant Virology in 1999. After 11 years in Europe, she returned home to the Philippines, where she joined the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), a not-for-profit international organisation that facilitates the transfer of new agricultural biotechnologies to developing countries. She spent six and a half years with ISAAA and helped establish and conceptualise its global knowledge sharing initiative and coordinated and managed its network of Biotechnology Information Centres in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Before joining NIE, she was a Programme Director at Evolve24, a US-based business analytics and research firm specialising in the measurement of perception, reputation and risk.
