Date: 23 September 2013 (Monday)
An NTS delegation comprising Dr J. Jackson Ewing (Research Fellow), Mr Pau Khan Khup Hangzo (Associate Research Fellow) and Margareth Sembiring (Research Analyst), visited the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) in Kuala Lumpur on 23 September, as part their research on the environmental impact of the Iskandar Development project in Johor.
The visitors had a discussion with MIMA’s researchers, namely Nazery Khalid, Senior Fellow; Cheryl Rita Kaur, Centre Head for Coastal and Marine Environment (CMER); and Nurul Syazana Yahaya, Researcher at CMER. The discussion centred around the environmental impact of the rapid development being undertaken in Johor, especially at its southern extremity, and also the impact on the lives of local communities such as fisherfolk and indigenous people. The discussion also focused on how the development in southern Johor could affect the environment of regional countries.
