School of Biological Sciences
Degree Programmes and Requirements | Description of Courses
Overview Mission To provide a distinctive university education in the Life Sciences, foster creative thinking, and uphold international standards of excellence in research. Core Values Integrity
The Life Sciences sector has been widely acknowledged as the focus of the next major technological revolution. New knowledge and discoveries generated from genome and molecular biology research are having major impacts on the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare, food and nutrition, quality of life and the environment. The School of Biological Sciences was established in July 2001 to meet the demand for high quality research scientists prepared to continue to advance medicine and biotechnology. In 2004, the School moved to a purpose-built facility on the NTU campus with 30,000 m² of total floor space, containing 60 research laboratories, core instrumentation facilities and an adjoining two storey animal house. The building also contains state-of-the-art classrooms, computer suites and teaching laboratories equipped with the latest facilities and high-speed wireless internet access providing world-class educational support for undergraduate and graduate students alike. The School offers intellectually rigorous curricula that are relevant to Life Sciences, combining detailed study of fundamentals with coverage of the most important advances in cutting-edge research. Integral to these is the component of drug discovery and development, such as from botanical and natural products, through student-centric research. Graduates from the undergraduate programmes and graduate research programmes in Biological Sciences are expected to meet the demand for talented researchers and provide a support network in the Life Sciences industry. The route to a medical profession is also available via further study in graduate medical school. The double degree programme, integrating western Biomedical Sciences and eastern traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), further prepares graduates to be part of the growing TCM clinical and research movement steadily gaining global momentum.
