Graduate academic programmes

Overview

As NTU expands its disciplines to become a fully comprehensive university, it is well-positioned to provide quality manpower training through graduate education for the nation and the region. NTU provides graduate students with the opportunity to explore challenging academic and career options and develop as a leader and scholar. With its excellent track record in engineering research and a thriving research environment, graduate students have the opportunity to learn from distinguished academics and work on a wide variety of high impact research projects alongside leading research specialists.

The University offers a comprehensive range of graduate programmes leading to the award of the degrees of Master and Doctor of Philosophy as well as Graduate Diplomas. Graduate degree programmes are by either research or coursework and dissertation.

Research programmes

Candidates reading for a higher degree by research pursue independent but supervised research on an approved topic based on which a thesis must be submitted for examination. Candidates are also required to do at least three to six courses. Selection of courses is made after consultation with the research supervisor.

Research candidates work closely and keep in regular contact with their supervisor on their research project. Supervisors will submit regular reports on the progress of each candidate under their supervision.

In addition to being examined on the thesis, a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must pass an oral examination on the subject matter of his thesis and related matters. For non-PhD candidates, the oral examination may be prescribed at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.

Coursework programmes

Candidates reading for a higher degree by coursework and dissertation follow a prescribed programme of study comprising several courses and undertake a project on which a dissertation will be written. For most programmes, the dissertation can also be replaced by a few equivalent courses. The course of study involves formal classes, lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory work and written examinations.

Classes are usually held in the evenings from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Depending on whether the programme is conducted on a full-time or part-time basis, classes could range from once to five times per week.

Programmes at NIE

The National institute of Education offers the following programmes by research: Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts and Master of Science. It also offers Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Education programmes by coursework and dissertation.

Partnership programmes with other universities

The University prides itself on continued, worldwide collaborations with the best in industry and academia. Partnerships have been developed with more than 300 universities and institutions in over 45 countries worldwide, and strong ties have been established with industry in research collaborations.

The following graduate programmes are offered in collaboration with partner universities:

Singapore-MIT Alliance

The Singapore-MIT Alliance is an innovative engineering education and research collaboration among three of the top engineering research universities in the world: NTU, NUS and MIT. Founded in November, 1998 to promote global engineering education and research, the alliance brings together the resources of three premier academic institutions, while providing students with unlimited access to exceptional faculty expertise and superior research facilities.

Singapore-Stanford Partnership

The Singapore Stanford Partnership is a joint effort between NTU's School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Standford's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to establish a Singapore-based premier graduate education and research programme in environmental engineering.

Partnership with Shanghai Jiaotong University

Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU), one of China 's foremost universities, officially inaugurated its SJTU Graduate School at NTU. Programmes offered: the SJTU-MBA programme and the NTU-SJTU Joint Executive MBA programme.

Dual Degree MSc (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems Engineering) with ESIEE

This dual degree programme offered by NTU and ESIEE taps European and Asian professional experiences to provide global enterprises and research institutes with world-class technologists in the field of MEMS Engineering.

Joint Degree in Master of Management in Hospitality at Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management

This premier Master of Management in Hospitality programme is offered and awarded by Cornell University 's renowned School of Hotel Administration and NTU's Nanyang Business School , an elite business school in Asia . The year-long programme is designed for the global industry yet focused on developing a wealth of expertise in Asian hospitality. Participants can expect a truly international experience spending six months in Singapore and the remaining six months in New York in the United States .

NTU-ESSEC double MBA

Nanyang MBA participants offering the general MBA or the specialized MBA in Marketing may register for the NTU-ESSEC Double MBA and earn two degrees simultaneously - an MBA each from NTU and the ESSEC Business School in Paris , France . They will spend two trimesters at NTU (beginning in July) before going to ESSEC in April for a year of full-time study.

NTU-St Gallen double MBA

Nanyang MBA participants offering the general MBA or the specialized MBA in Marketing may register for the NTU-St Gallen double MBA and earn two degrees simultaneously - an MBA from NTU and a Master of Arts in Strategy and International Management from the University of St Gallen in Switzerland . They will spend a trimester at NTU (beginning in July) before going to St Gallen in October for a year of full-time study.

NTU-Waseda double MBA

Leveraging both universities' reputations as leaders in Management and Technology education, this programme is designed to develop and enhance the managerial, entrepreneurial and technology management skills and capabilities of engineers and managers taking on manufacturing, operations, technology and related functions. This year-long full-time programme (a part-time option is available for a longer duration of study) is taught in English and conducted at NTU's state-of-the-art facilities in Singapore . In addition, a three-week business study mission to Japan will provide students with invaluable first-hand observation of the best practices in Japanese manufacturing and technology.

Joint MSc (Intergrated Circuit Design Programme) with Technische Universität München (Germany)

The international Master of Science programme in Integrated Circuit Design jointly offered by NTU and Technische Universitaet Muenchen will educate the next generation of engineers and leaders for the semiconductor industry. Contents of the programme range from analog, digital and mixed-circuit design to design methodology, automation, product manufacturing and testing. Integrated circuit design is also placed in a broader context, for example, by teaching fundamental concepts of signal processing, which are at the core of today's communications circuits. Non-technical but essential topics such as product marketing, international management, patent law and aspects of culture and globalisation are also covered.

Joint MSc (Microelectronics Programme) with Technische Universität München (Germany)

Since the first semiconductor manufacturing related plant was established in Singapore in the late 1960s, semiconductor manufacturing industry has grown significantly and has provided a strong boost to Singapore’s economy. The semiconductor industry presently employs over 37,000 people in Singapore, and accounts for tens billion Singapore dollars in output in the year 2006. We are expecting more wafer fabrication related companies to establish their wafer fabrication plants and research centres in Singapore in the future. To meet the foreseen demands, a highly specialized Master of Science programme in Microelectronics, which is jointly offered by Nanyang Technical University (NTU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM), provides an excellent platform to train engineers for the silicon wafer fabrication industry. The students first complete a series of coursework taught by both NTU and TUM professors and later may embark on an internship in the semiconductor industry and related research institutes.
