The Home Ultrasound System (HUS) consists of a stand-alone Home Ultrasound Machine (HUM) that can be interfaced to a PC and/or internet network. The objective is to research and develop a low cost, easy-to-use prototyping portable HUM that is capable of performing simple scanning procedures with assisted guidance. To avoid any medico-legal implications, useful ultrasound data and/or images would be transmitted via telecommunication networks to a doctor for consultation. In the home ultrasound system environment, ultrasound scanning could be performed at home by non-experts (e.g., patients and their family members), and the acquired ultrasound data including images can be transferred to hospitals for interpretation by radiologists and/or doctors. Thus, assisted guidance is necessary for the home ultrasound system to enable acquisition of clinically useful ultrasound images and measurements by less trained operators. The first application of the HUM is for high risk (HR) pregnant women to acquire medical data/images at home. The focus on research includes:
The HUS project has generated considerable commercial interest, with NTU students from the Technopreneurship and Innovation Programme winning the 2nd prize worth $10,000 in a business plan competition for a business plan based on this technology.
