The current focus of the SUWA EBMTE initiative is the creation of a clinically useful esophageal replacement by the technique of tissue engineering. Achievement of this goal will lead to tissue engineered constructs that could replace all parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The EBMTE initiative seeks to develop a multidisciplinary program involving research and education to increase the number of researchers who have a well-integrated knowledge of cell biology, clinical sciences, materials science and engineering. The SUWA D2H2 initiative focuses on the growing demand for access to high quality healthcare information and equipment or devices at a reasonable cost. Rapid developments in the information technology and instrumentation engineering are changing two aspects of the practice of medicine namely, the access to the complex medical information, and the availability of new diagnostic techniques and treatment. This work has been pioneered by the Department of Bioengineering at UW, which is becoming a centre of excellence for the research and development in this field. Simultaneously, NTU has also been working in the area of telemedicine and intelligent instrumentation. SUWA aims to bring the expertise from the two Institutes together to frame a coherent systems-oriented view of this field. D2H2 is made up of 3 projects:
