Higher Degrees by Research
Doctor of Philosophy , Master of Arts and Master of Science
Research Areas
- Education
- Humanities
- Physical Education
- Sciences
Candidates reading for a higher degree by research pursue an independent but supervised research on an approved topic based on which a thesis must be submitted for examination.
A rigorous system is used to prepare the candidates for the research phase. The candidates are required to attend classes and do well in the examination in at least three to six courses. Selection of courses is made after consultation with the research supervisor.
Candidates who are admitted as Research Students in the first instance are also required to undergo a Confirmation Exercise in order to be confirmed as a higher degree candidate. The Confirmation Exercise, which is conducted after a period of study, requires the candidates to submit a progress report on their research work as well as to present and pass a confirmation seminar.
Research candidates work closely and keep in regular contact with their assigned supervisor on their research project. Supervisors will submit regular reports on the progress of each candidate under their supervision.
In addition to being examined on the thesis, a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must pass an oral examination on the subject matter of his thesis.
Doctor in Education
This is a dual award programme, offered jointly with the Institute of Education, London, for professionals who would like to extend their expertise and training, as well as develop skills in research, evaluation and reflection on practice. The degree enables you to undertake a common programme at two institutions and on successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Doctor in Education (EdD) degree from both institutions. In an increasing global educational environment, the programme provides you with a diversity of educational knowledge and views. Comparison of professional practices within the context of the two different landscapes will be drawn, thus enhancing the creation of new professional knowledge. One of the aims of the EdD programme is to develop professional leaders who are able to identify and solve complex "field-based" problems.

Office of Education Research
The Office of Education Research (OER) was set up in 2008 to oversee the planning, design, development and management of education research across NIE, including the administration of research funds provided by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. It has four research centres under its purview. The research is guided by a rigorous research, development and innovation framework, and aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Singapore schools and to enhance NIE’s standing as a leading international research institute.
The Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP) conducts world-class educational research that focuses on the analysis and improvement of pedagogy and practice in Singapore schools. CRPP’s research projects address a wide range of issues related to curriculum, instruction, assessment, teachers’ professional development, and students’ characteristics. This research helps to inform Singapore’s teacher education and educational policies, which in turn enables students and teachers meet the challenges of new economies, pedagogies and technologies.
The Learning Sciences Laboratory (LSL) is the first centre in Asia devoted to conducting research based on theory and research perspectives from the learning sciences. LSL is committed to doing rigorous research into real-world issues in learning and teaching in Singapore schools that will also advance important theoretical and research perspectives in the learning sciences and in education. It aims to empower learners, in schools and beyond, through design research centred on enabling tools and participatory cultures.
The Centre for International Comparative Studies (CICS) is a joint collaboration between NIE and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Centre at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College. CICS spearheads comparative research that draws on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) international databases.
The UNESCO-NIE Centre for Arts Research in Education (CARE) generates, collects and disseminates high quality research that promotes education in and through the arts, through a strong collaborative network between NIE, UNESCO and like-minded individuals in the Asia-Pacific region. CARE is part of a network of UNESCO observatories in the region. Its vision is to be a centre for excellence in arts research in education in Singapore and the region.
