Earth Observatory of Singapore

Degree Programmes and Requirements | Description of Courses

Overview

The newly formed Division of Earth Sciences, a part of the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), is designed to give students a solid understanding of the structure and history of our planet as well as the physical processes that formed and now influence the Earth. Besides giving students an extensive exposure to a broad range of research, students are also given opportunities to conduct fieldwork in an outstanding geological active region in Asia and elsewhere. They will be equipped with skills (e.g. observation, analysis, laboratory skills) to carry out experiments and modelling to test their hypotheses. Advanced facilities have been built for students to efficiently collect, process, analyse and visualize earthquake, volcano, tsunami and climate data/samples obtained from the field.

Our Division, together with EOS, aims to build up a team of outstanding, collaborative researchers to advance understanding of Southeast Asia’s dynamic oceans, atmosphere and tectonic plates. These researchers will be involved in conducting fundamental research on the tectonic, volcanic and climatic processes in and around Southeast Asia. Better understanding of these natural hazards will contribute to safer and more sustainable societies.

MAIN RESEARCH FOCUS
  • Volcanoes
  • Tectonics
  • Climate Change
