School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Degree Programmes and Requirements | Description of Courses

Overview

The foundation of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) heralds an enormously significant moment in the life of Nanyang Technological University, representing, as it does, a crucial expression of fulfillment of the university project. Taking its place beside the established technological disciplines, the new school offers a firm promise of intellectual fusion and collaboration, vibrancy, cultural enrichment and freshness. Complimenting the existing scientific-based disciplines, HSS will contribute added creative dimensions, innovative thinking strategies and a key focus on the capacity of each individual to make a difference through intellectual self-responsibility and resourcefulness.

HSS is also founded at a momentous juncture in contemporary times – marked by rapid technological advancement (especially in Information Technology and the Life Sciences), the rise of the Creative Economy (e.g. cultural industries), the post-socialist transformation of the People’s Republic of China, political uncertainty and new security risks (e.g. terrorism and SARS). The 21st century world demands of graduates, teachers, and scholars new perspectives and attitudes, which transcend narrow specialisation and conventional wisdom. In light of this, the vision of HSS is “to become a leading intellectual centre of humanities and social sciences in Asia, making valuable contributions to the advancement of knowledge and human life.”

Mission

“… to fulfil the ideals of teaching and scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, enabling graduates and researchers to confront the challenges of the 21st century world.”

Vision

“… to be a leading intellectual centre of humanities and social sciences in Asia, making valuable contributions to the advancement of knowledge and human life.”

Our Graduates

“… will develop breadth of imagination and depth of perspective… will be proactive rather than reactive in a fast-changing 21st century environment… alive to local, regional and global issues… able to take the initiative in analysing and improving the world around us - intelligently, inventively, critically, and creatively. And make the difference…”

Divisions

Chinese

The Division of Chinese at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has its roots traced to the foundation of Nanyang University in 1955, as well as to the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture (CCLC), which was established in 1994.

In July 2004, the Division of Chinese continued to offer the Minor in Chinese and General Electives, which had been offered by the CCLC. In addition, the Division launched its Graduate Programmes, and offered scholarships to full-time M.A. and PhD research students. In July 2005, it expanded into a full-fledged Division and started offering B.A. (Honours) in Chinese.

The Division of Chinese is one of the six Divisions within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, which was newly established as part of NTU’s plan to become a comprehensive university. It is the flagship division in the field of humanities and has full support from the University.

Its mission is to inherit the Chinese traditions, to understand the contemporary world, and to encompass the local and the region.
