"Periphery"

Presented at the Second International Art and Science Exhibition, Beijing China, November 2006. Concept: Russell Pensyl, Software Engineering: Ta Huynh Duy Nguyen, Electrical Engineering: Lee Shang Ping

Periphery is a “site specific” art work, where consideration is given to the space, location and inevitably to the populace and culture. This project was developed for installation in Beijing, P.R.China. The work presents a unique opportunity to explore how the change over time provides a glimpse into the cultural and ethnographic character within a culture and how this is evident in the spaces where they live. One aspect of such a project needs to be the consideration of how the space and structures came to be over time. How it’s “authenticity” has been created.

The artwork uses a computer vision system that detects the position and motion of the viewer and causes several layers or imagery to be revealed. Using infrared cameras a capture source the position of the viewer is processed to control the imagery and the interface to the system.
