Project Overview

The main aim of the project is to design and develop a multimedia modem. The development of Multimedia Networks and systems has strategic importance to Singapore and is pertinent to the success of Singapore-ONE network. Broadband network has two broad classifications: core network and access network. Core network consists of high-speed switching system such as ATM and high-speed transmission system such as SDH/SONET. In the core network we do research only in the area of performance analysis and system integration. Major developmental activity in the core network is undertaken by the large corporations and their research subsidiaries. As such, we intend to focus our research on the access network which has a significant commercial potential.
For the broadband access network, many technologies (HFC, SDV, FTTC, FTTH, HDSL, ADSL, etc) have been proposed based on optical fibre, coaxial cable and unshielded twisted pair copper cable. Singapore Cable Vision has selected cable modem and SingTel has chosen ADSL modem. Both modems are in the introductory phase and their is a tremendous scope for our contribution to the design in order to enhance the features and improve the performance. Initially we like to concentrate on analyzing the pros and cons of various technologies, with a view of selecting a most suitable technology considering the S-ONE requirements.
It's most likely that we shall embark on the fast developing technology, DSL. Various coding, modulation and signal processing techniques are adopted in various DSL modems. DSP is extensively used to equalize impairments and achieve coding algorithms.  With our expertise and strength in DSPs, we believe that we can achieve a successful design in this fast developing technology. When we are successful in our R&D effort, we can look for industry partners to commercialize the design.
