“NTU’s 2nd Major in Food Science & Technology was featured live on the 95.8FM Talkshow.

This programme will be offered in conjunction with School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences,

B.Sc Hons in Chemistry & Biological Chemistry (CBC) and School of Biological Sciences, B.Sc Hons

in Biological Sciences (BS) in AY2014/2015. The 2nd Major in FST would be exclusively offered to

students from BEng(CBE), BSc(CBC) and BSc(BS) programmes, given its inter-disciplinary nature.

Lianhe Zaobao: NTU partners Agilent to expand water research - Professor William Chen (19 Dec 2013)

NTU is partnering Agilent Technologies Inc. to develop solutions that will improve the biological treatment of wastewater.

NTU Prof William Chen and NEWRI Analytical Cluster Leader played a key role in setting up the NEWRI-Agilent partnership.

His focus has been on establishing and applying cellular bioengineering analytical platforms for pharmaceutical and environmental

cutting edge applications. NTU researchers will now be are able to better monitor microbial metabolic activity, reduce the carbon footprint

of wastewater treatment, and to increase energy recovery. Dean of NTU’s College of Engineering and Executive Director of NEWRI,

Prof Ng Wun Jern commented that the rapid industrialisation brought about by Asia’s economic take-off may exacerbate water pollution

and, therefore, increases the demand for high-quality water. Prof Ng further illustrated this with an analogy saying that wastewater and its

contents are akin to a black box. We may not know all the micro-organisms in the black box as well as their behaviours. NTU and Agilent

have signed a MOU and will be starting with two initial projects. The first project aims to develop a real-time monitoring system for wastewater

treatment while the second project, led by NEWRI’s Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre, aims to harness microbes for wastewater treatment.
