‘Positive thinking’ seems like a useful buzz phrase. Posters abound with variations of the theme. We often spew them to friends. When all is well, sharing ‘this too will come to pass’ is probably irrelevant. If he is going through a mild hiccup, ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ may be somewhat encouraging. If he is struggling with a crisis, like a major break-up, ‘many fishes in the ocean’ can come across as patronizing and dismissive.
