  Welcome from President

Welcome to NTU! We invite you to join us and discover for yourself a truly enriching and life-changing experience at Singapore’s leading science and technology University.

This year, NTU commemorates its 55th Anniversary. In marking this milestone, we celebrate our achievements since our founding as Nanyang University in 1955. Fifty-five years ago, the local Chinese community – from business tycoons to trishaw drivers – rallied together to establish the region’s first Chinese-language University. We have since evolved to become a research intensive University that is ranked today among the top one percent of universities globally.

Even as we celebrate our successes, we are embarking on a far-reaching strategic plan – NTU 2015 – which encapsulates our goals and aspirations for the next five years and beyond. To meet the challenges of the future, the University is building on its core strengths and venturing into new areas to find solutions to the burning issues of our time.

The pioneering spirit that inspired our founders to establish this University more than half a century ago encourages boldness in everything we do, whether in the library, the classroom, the laboratory, the theatre or the playing field.

An institution is only as great as its people.

A University’s reputation and standing rests on two pillars – its faculty and students. To produce a great University, we need great faculty and great students. At NTU, we strive to attract the best teaching and research talent from around the world. As students who have worked hard to earn your place in this University, I urge you to seize the opportunity to learn from your peers and professors. Make the most of your time here, pursue your passions, and realize your dreams and ambitions.

NTU is working hard to achieve peaks of excellence in the areas of Sustainable Earth, New Media, Future Healthcare, New Silk Road and Innovation Asia. As we continue to strengthen the foundations of research and education, these peaks of excellence will help propel the University into the ranks of great global universities and nurture its students to become the next generation of leaders.

From academic courses taught by renowned professors, to opportunities for research and independent study, NTU offers an extraordinary breadth of extracurricular activities. Students can choose from a wide range of experiences and opportunities to explore their interests and deepen their knowledge. With over 400 strategic alliances and collaborations with leading institutions and industry partners around the world, cultural and research exchanges at NTU are extensive and rich.

Beyond the academic curriculum, I encourage you to engage in community service and expand your perspective. Industrial and professional attachments, combined with NTU’s global immersion and student exchange programmes, present unique opportunities for you to venture abroad to one of our many partner universities. These international experiences and cross-cultural exchanges are invaluable in equipping you with the skills and aptitudes to thrive in today’s globalised economy.

Our Yunnan Garden campus, Singapore’s largest residential campus, provides rich opportunities for student groups and communities to share knowledge and experiences. NTU has a remarkable variety of activities and programmes to foster a strong appreciation of art, culture and heritage. You hone their creative talents and develop your leadership skills through involvement in student clubs, friendly competitions, hall activities and community events.

Located in a lush garden campus of 200 hectares, NTU is a vibrant, cosmopolitan hub where some 23,000 undergraduates, 10,000 graduate students and 5,500 faculty and staff from more than 67 countries study, work and play.

Selected as the site of the world’s inaugural Youth Olympics Village, NTU is proud to showcase its vibrant campus to the world, when it hosts thousands of young athletes and officials in August 2010.

We welcome you to join NTU and be a part of our community.
