The six months spent at Batey Ads were of the most eye-opening months of my university life. At Batey Ads, interns usually do a project. My major project was to prepare a proposal on how to revive the cultural scene in Singapore.
As research for my project, I adopted several strategies. First I looked at what the competitors were doing, then I went through statistics to look at trends and to pick out any issues which I felt needed addressing. Next, I spoke with cultural organisations in Singapore and shared with them my vision of how Singapore’s cultural scene could look like. Their input proved valuable and helped me find-tune my project greatly. Fouth, I did an informal survey among users of Travel Newsgroup on the to find out people’s impressions of Singapore were and her culture. I wanted to know what they wanted in a cultural offering of a country.
When I presented this project to the client, he seemed pleased with the ideas and the effort put into the project. He suggested that I follow up with a survey to look at their response to some of the ideas I presented. That started me on my next project at Batey Ads.
Besides working on individual projects, I learnt the other aspects of client servicing. This ranged from handling clients’ requests to giving realistic deadlines to other departments in the agency to produce a piece of work.
I learnt the steps involved in the production of an ad. Through actioning jobs, proof-reading and evaluating materials, I feel that I have honed my skills quite substantially in analysing a piece of work.
I also attended the Batey Ads internal training program, which I thought was very useful. Speakers included clients and staff themselves. Mr Ian Batey himself gave an inspiring speech which could only come from a man who has been in the thick of action for a long time now. I learnt about conducting and recording meetings and the role of relationship marketing, among others.
I
am grateful for the experience and trust that Batey Ads has given me.
Being an intern did not deny me the opportunities that other staff had.
I do not think I can ever look at an ad now the same way that I did before.
I lived and breathed advertising at Batey Ads!
