Our involvement in NTU's Industrial Attachment program has been a fruitful experience to both the company and the students. Every year, there will be 2 to 3 new faces from NTU attached to Automation Department. Everyone anticipates the arrival of the NTU IA students. We prepare a list of assignments for them knowing that they are well within their capabilities.
In general, the students are able to adapt to the new environment very fast and able to start the first project in a week’s time. They are keen to learn and practical. In some cases, students are innovative enough to create new design from theory. One example is a suction unit from Venturi principle.
Overall, students are able to mix with our staff. They joined in the outings and participated in the company’s recreation events.

Philips Singapore Pte Ltd (Tuner Factory) has benefitted from the NTU Industrial Attachment Programme throughout the last 10 years. The programme provides a mutual opportunity for both Philips Tuner Factory and the students to gain from one other.
On the part of the students, it allows them to be exposed to the real working life in the industries. They are able to better utilise the technical knowledge and skills they have learnt in the university to their work and to adapt to the fast changes in the working environment. The 6-month industrial attachment gives the students ample opportunities to be acquainted with
the systems in Philips as well as to plan, practise, contribute and work with the staff to complete their projects within the stipulated time frame.
For Philips, the IA programme is very positive and a fruitful co-operation between the organisation and the students is established. By assigning projects to the students, we have gained considerably from the knowledge of the students. For example, for this year's NTU attachment, we had two students (one EEE and one CE), who had been attached to our Development Department, to work in the project of developing a new measuring set-up, using new LabView software, to allow a faster and more flexible way of automatically measuring tuner parameters. The work delivered by the students was of a high standard and demonstrated a tangible improvement of our existing operational measuring set-up. We would like to extend our appreciation to the NTU Industrial Attachment Programme, which allows us to make a big step forward in our tuner measuring capabilities.

This programme has also served as a 'match-making' exercise whereby the company can make a job offer to the student if he performs well during the IA period and the student decides if he likes or can adapt to the company.
