The NTU IA is a win-win situation between NTU and Delphi Automotive Systems. The students have benefitted from the 6 months attachment and the company has gained with the projects done and implemented. NTU IA has resulted in a number of projects being completed and implemented for use with cost savings and increase in productivity. The students have made tremendous contribution during the 6 months stay in the company. IA has also provided the students exposure to industry work/jobs and help them to apply their knowledge at the workplace. The 6 months IA is a good program for engineering students.

The Sewerage Department has always been supportive of the NTU Industrial Attachment (IA) Programme. Public Utilities Board
The Public Utilities Board (PUB) has always been committed to training and we are pleased to collaborate with tertiary institutions to provide industrial attachments for students to enable them to gain some working experience prior to graduation. Third-year students from Civil Engineering and Electrical/Electronics/Mechanical Engineering fields are attached to our Water Department for about six months. The attachment programme is designed such that students will have hands-on experience that allows them to apply their theoretical knowledge to the day-to-day operations. They will have the opportunity to interact with engineering practitioners and work in an organisation which is internationally recognised.
The students from NTU have been known to have an inquiring mind and are eager to learn. During their practical attachment, they have contributed useful ideas and were able to complete given assignments/projects on time. This project work gives students an insight into engineering problems and issues which might have possible attendant operational implications. This hands-on experience in water supply engineering will thus enable them to assess their interest in this field of work.
On our part and as a contribution to the nation, PUB will continue to support NTU in providing a more rounded education for its students to meet our private and public sector requirements.
Public Works Department
The 6 month attachment duration for students is good as it allows sufficient time for students to pick up some practical experience in both design and construction supervision practice. The students have the opportunity to understand the process involved starting from sketch design till completion of construction even though they do not have the opportunity to see through the entire process. They will understand the importance of using engineering drawings to convey design intentions and requirements  in a  construction contract, how   PWD engineers
administer construction contract, quality control of construction works etc. This attachment help them to understand better their textbook knowledge when applied in the practical world of construction.
To ensure effective learning and make the programme meaningful, the students are deliberately given some responsibilities or work assignments under close supervision and guidance by PWD engineers. The close guidance will help the students to avoid being overwhelmed by the assignments given to them.
From past experience, NTU students are disciplined, enthusiastic and keen to learn.  The IA programme is also beneficial to PWD in that the students could help us in some design office activities such as doing simple designs, perform structural modeling using computer as well as in actual construction supervision.
In short, the IA programme is beneficial to both NTU and PWD.

There are many advantages to this alliance - students get to work on real-life projects, line managers enjoy the benefit of additional project team members who are both willing and capable, and because we see the students in an actual work situation, we can better assess them for recruitment purposes.

The NTU Industrial Attachment Programme allows the students to gain a better insight of the working knowledge of the people and environment to which they are attached to. Each student is given specific job/project assignments and feedback received from the line departments is that students are able to complete the assignments within schedule. In the process, these students are able to build on their intensive skills with staff of the organisation. The bondage is further strengthened as the attachment programme acts as a "springboard" for the students to meet the "outside world".
