The NTU Story


The book entitled "The Making of a University of Industry and Business - The NTU Story" was launched on 25 September 1995 by Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence. It is a 160-page hardcover book that documents the development of NTU from its beginning in 1980. A sum of $110,000 is targeted to be raised from the sale of the book for the NTU Endowment Fund.

The books are on sale at the Campus Book Centre (South Spine)and the College Book Store (NIE), as well as the Alumni & Endowment Office (1st level, Administration Building) at $50 a copy.

$400,000 Donation to Promote Chinese Language & Culture

In June 1995, Mr Wee Cho Yaw, chairman of the United Overseas Bank and former council chairman of the Nanyang Unviersity, and the Lee Foundation each donated $200,000 to the NTU Endowment Fund. The donations were pledged during the 4th Nantah Global Reunion Dinner held on 3 June and are to be used to finance research and teaching of Chinese at NTU's Centre for Chinese Language and Culture.


UOB Professorship in Banking

The first professorship established at NTU was the UOB Professorship in Banking launched on 20 October 1995 at the UOB Penthouse with a $1.50 million donation from the United Overseas Bank. The establishment of this professorship by the UOB is part of the bank's $10 million donation to charities and educational institutions in conjunction with its 60 anniversary celebrations this year.


Wee Kim Wee Professorship in Communication Studies

A record sum of $2.3 million was raised by a committee headed by Mr Ho Kwon Ping, president of Wah Chang International, to establish the Wee Kim Wee Professorship in Communication Studies at NTU. The Lee Foundation, Shaw Foundation, Singapore Press Holdings and Far East Organisation each pledged $500,000, while the Singapore International Media and the Goh Foundation pledged $250,000 and $50,000 respectively to establish the professorship in honour of former President Wee Kim Wee for his contributions to the country and to the field of communications. The launching ceremony, held on 4 November 1995 at the Shangri-la Hotel Ballroom, coincided with Dr Wee's 80th birthday.
