Entertainment in Singapore

 

Nature:

 

  • Bird Park – close by, great shows, picture with parrots a great souvenir
  • Bukit Timah Nature Reserve – for older kids, several different hikes, cross-biking trail, rock wall climbing at dairy farm nearby
  • Night Safari – tram available for children, elderly and tired, walking yourself is a different experience again
  • Sungei Buloh Nature Park – wetlands and mangroves, information centre, wooden walkway and trails, needs 2-3 hours
  • Farmart Centre – various farms in Singapore that are open for tours and direct home delivery, just north from NTU
  • Pulau Ubin – a day trip with walking or cycling and good seafood at the end of the day
  • Singapore Zoo – very well done and extensive, you can easy spend whole day and add it with the free musical show at the entrance of the night Safari while waiting to enter the Night Safari.
  • Botanical Gardens – bring mosquito repellent, good walks through the woods, Orchid Gardens
  • Chinese and Japanese Gardens – good for long walks, fun for kids during Chinese Lantern Festival
  • Underwater World on Sentosa – for those who have not seen one yet
  • Mount Faber Park –cable car to World Trade Centre and Sentosa Island
  • Kent Ridge Park – a nice park with few people, small new historic museum at the top called Reflections on Bukit Chandu
  • West Coast Park – fabulous and enormous playground.  BBQ facilities (these need to be rented in advance) view of the ocean, cycling (no bikes hiring service there) bird sanctuary, walks etc.  Gets very busy at weekends and on holidays.
  • Bukit Batok Park
  • Labrador Park – Quiet park in view of the ocean.  Pleasant walks
  • Mac Ritchie and Peirce Road Reservoir– natural area with water, trails through woods, fishing, refreshment area

Note – beaches are at Changi, East Coast and Sentosa, but direct contact with sand should be avoided, because of the hookworm being spread in some areas

Activity:

 

  • Jurong East water complex  and Jurong West water complex– waterslides, lazy river, wave pool, Jacuzzi, baby pool and kids play station.  Very busy at weekends.
  • Safara Jurong – Indoor playground “Kidz Amaze” a 3-storey high indoor playground, one of the largest in Singapore. It is just across Jurong point.
  • JCube – walking distance from Jurong East MRT, an iconic facade with Olympic-sized ice rink complete with 460-seat gallery. It has lots of fine eateries and a movie theatre too.
  • River Cruise or Harbor Cruise from Boat Quay and Clifford Pier respectively
  • Science Center at Jurong East area, an Omni Theatre is right next to it, great fun
  • Exploring an HDB area with playground, hawker centre and small movie theatre
  • Real train ride to and from Jahor Bahru (Malaysian city across the Straits)
  • Cycling to Dragon Kiln off of Jalan Bahar (bring mosquito repellent after rains), or to the city’s Protestant, Catholic, Buddhist and Muslim cemetery just north from us on Jalan Bahar
  • Skateboarding at HDB area on left (Jurong West 846) behind the Nanyang Flyover
  • Westwood Park (on Jalan Bahar, across from Westwood Secondary School) with playground areas
  • Golden Village – movie theatre at Jurong Point
  • Zone X Change – video arcade at Jurong Point
  • Snow City – next to Singapore Science Centre and the Omni Theatre Building an opportunity to feel cold and sleigh
  • Bowling – Raffles Marina, or at SuperBowl Jurong or Cathay Bowl Jurong East
  • Sailing – at Raffles Marina, the public may rent the small learning boats (Lazers)
  • Discovery Centre at 510 Upper Jurong Rd., thematic exhibitions, IWerks large screen documentary movies, 4-D movie and Crossfire paintball facilities
  • I-Max Theater in Great World City or at JCube or at the Discovery Centre
  • Kite flying at Marina South City Park
  • Mini Golf at East Coast Park.
  • Wild Wild Wet at Down Town East is a largest water theme park in Singapore. It has distinctive rides, lazy river, tsunami and other unique rides. You can have whole day of fun with your family. It is very crowded over the weekends and also during local school holidays.

Museums:

  • Chinese Heritage Center in Yunnan Garden on campus
  • Singapore Mint Coin Gallery – close to Jurong East MRT and south of AYE on Teban Gardens Crescent, Singapore Mint is there and it also houses a small collection of Singapore and foreign coins
  • NUS Museums – collection of Chinese, South and Southeast Asian art
  • Asian Civilizations Museum – has kids areas and interactive info stations activated by your entry card
  • Central Fire Station – on 62 Hill Street (City Hall MRT), open mornings only
  • History Museum – by Dhoby Ghaut, not too large, interesting exhibitions
  • Art Museum – across the street from the History Museum, lots of special exhibitions
  • Naval Museum – close to Sembawang MRT, great for military enthusiasts
  • There are several on Sentosa Island

Other:

o   Free Concerts on Campus – look for flyers posted at North and South Spine or sign up to receive emails from the NanyangConnect list server for notification

o   Little India – different sights (colours, flowers, dresses, people), sounds (of movie music) and scents (incense and food) and tastes is a great cultural excursion, extra stands, decorations and activities during Deepavali in October/November

o   China Town – great food, lots of Association Halls and temples, architecture, nice walk with interesting antique and clothes shops, especially filled with stalls during Chinese New Year in January/February

o   Chinese and Japanese Garden –great set up for Chinese Lantern Festival in September/October

o   Places of Worship – visiting and asking questions

o   Events and activities organized by Nanyang Community Club – on Pioneer Rd. North and Jurong West St. 91, look for flyers and staff are helpful
