Short Biography
Dr.
Yonggang Wen (M’08-S’14-F’20) is the
Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological
University (NTU), Singapore. He has also served as the Associate Dean
(Research) at College of Engineering at NTU Singapore since 2018. He served
as the Acting Director of Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre (NTC) at NTU from
2017 to 2019, and the Assistant Chair (Innovation) of School of Computer
Science and Engineering (SCSE) at NTU from 2016 to 2018. He received his PhD
degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (minor in Western
Literature) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge,
USA, in 2008. He has worked extensively in learning-based system prototyping
and performance optimization for large-scale networked computer systems.
Previously he led product development in content delivery network at Cisco,
which had a revenue impact of 3 Billion US dollars globally. His work in Multi-Screen
Cloud Social TV has been featured by global media (more than 1600
news articles from over 29 countries) and received 2013 ASEAN ICT Awards (Gold
Medal). His work on DCwiz, a Cloud AI platform to digitalize, optimize and automate data center operations and management, has won 2020 IEEE TCCPS Industrial Technical Excellence Award, 2016 ASEAN ICT Awards (Gold Medal)
and 2015 Datacentre Dynamics Awards 2015 – APAC (‘Oscar’
award of data centre industry). He has won 2019 Nanyang Research Award and 2016
Nanyang Awards in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the highest achievements at NTU, Singapore. He is a
co-recipient of multiple journal best papers awards, including IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (2019), IEEE Multimedia (2015), and and several best paper awards from international conferences, including 2020 IEEE VCIP, 2016 IEEE Globecom, 2016 IEEE Infocom MuSIC
Workshop, 2015 EAI/ICST Chinacom, 2014 IEEE WCSP,
2013 IEEE Globecom and 2012 IEEE EUC. He received
2016 IEEE ComSoc MMTC Distinguished Leadership
Award. He has served or is serving on editorial boards for multiple transactions and journals,
including IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology,
IEEE Wireless Communication Magazine, IEEE Communications Survey &
Tutorials, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Transactions on Signal and
Information Processing over Networks, IEEE Access Journal and Elsevier Ad Hoc
Networks, and was elected as the Chair for IEEE ComSoc
Multimedia Communication Technical Committee (2014-2016). His research
interests include cloud computing, green data center,
distributed machine learning, blockchain, big data analytics, multimedia
network and mobile computing. He is a Fellow of IEEE. Academic Biography
Yonggang Wen was born in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China. He
received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (minor
in Western Literature) from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2008; his
MPhil degree (with honour) in Information Engineering from Chinese University
of Hong Kong (CUHK), Hong Kong, China, in 2001; and his BEng degree (with
honour) in Electronic Engineering and Information Science from University of
Science and Technology of China (USTC), Hefei, Anhui, China, in 1999. His
research interests focus on large-scale networked computer systems for
emerging services and applications, include cloud computing, distributed
machine learning, green data center, big data
analytics, mobile computing, multimedia network and green ICT. Dr. Wen is
currently the Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and also serving as the
Associate Dean (Research) with College of Engineering, at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has been
the Acting Director (2017-2019) for Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre and the
Assistant Chair (Innovation) (2016-2018) at the School of Computer Science
and Engineering (SCSE), NTU Singapore.
Previously, he has worked in Cisco as a Senior Software Engineer and a
System Architect for content networking products. He has also worked
as a Research Intern at Bell Laboratories, Sycamore Networks and Mitsubishi
Electric Research Laboratory (MERL), and served as a Technical Advisor to the
Chairman at Linear A Networks, Inc. In academic research, he has published
extensively in top journals (e.g., TPAMI, TNNLS, TMM, TCSVT, JSAC and TWC) and prestigious conferences (e.g., Sigcomm, MobiSys, IJCAI, AAAI, ACM MM, Infocom and ICDCS). In technology commercialization, the product he led to
develop has been under trial with more than 10 international service
providers, and booked revenue of 10 Million US dollars annually and had a
revenue impact of 3 Billion US dollars globally. His system research has been
featured by more than 1600 news articles from over 29 countries (e.g., The Straits Times, The Business Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Channel News Asia, ZDNet, CNet, United Press International, ACM
Tech News, Times of India, Yahoo News, etc). Dr. Wen is
a Fellow of IEEE, and a member of Sigma Xi (the Scientific Research Society) and SIAM. He has
served as TPC Co-chair for international conferences (e.g., IEEE ICME’21, QoMEX’18,
IEEE ICME’17, MOBIMEDIA’15, IEEE NAS’14, GameNets’12 and IEEE MSN’12), and on conference organization committee
(e.g., ACM MM’20, IEEE BigMM’19, IEEE
ICME’19, IEEE ICME’18, IEEE Infocom’16, ICCCN’11 and PCM’12). He is currently
serving as the Area Editor for IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IoT-J) and
IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials (ComS&T),
and as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Big Data (TBD), ACM Transactions
on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications (TOMM), IEEE
Wireless Communications Magazine (WCM), IEEE Access Journal, and Springer
Knowledge and Information System (KAIS), and has served on editorial boards
for IEEE IoT-J, IEEE Transactions on
Multimedia (TMM), IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video
Technology (TCSVT), IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information
Processing over Networks (TSIPN), and Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks. He co-founded IEEE ComSoc SIG on Green Data Center and Cloud
Computing, and has served as the Chair for IEEE ComSoc MMTC
(2014-2016), and serviced as the vice chair for IEEE ComSoc
MMTC (2012-2014 ) and a SIG leader for IEEE ComSoc
MMTC (2010-2012). He was the sole winner of 2017 Nanyang Awards in Innovation and
Entrepreneurship, one of the recipients of Cisco Pioneer Award (honorable mentioning) in 2009 and the Cisco Achievement
Program Award twice in 2010. He received 2016 IEEE ComSoc
MMTC Leadership Award. He is a co-recipient of 2018 IEEE TCSVT Best Paper
Award, 2015 IEEE Multimedia Magazine Best Paper Award and Best Paper Awards
at 2016 IEEE Globecom, 2016 IEEE Infocom MuSIC
Workshop, 2015 EAI/ICST Chinacom, 2014 IEEE WCSP,
2013 IEEE Globecom and 2012 IEEE EUC. His work on Multi-Screen Cloud Social TV was in
the finalist for NAB Technology Innovation Award 2013 and received the Gold
Medal of ASEAN ICT Awards 2013 (Gold Medal). His work on Cloud3DView has won the 2016 ASEAN ICT
Awards (Gold Medal) and the Data Centre Dynamics Awards 2015 – APAC. |
