Professor Joachim Loo

Welcome to the SEED Lab – Smart Encapsulation & Enhanced Delivery at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

Led by Professor Joachim Loo, the SEED Lab focuses on the design and engineering of advanced materials and systems for encapsulation, controlled release, and targeted delivery. Our work sits at the intersection of materials science, engineering, and translational applications, addressing real-world challenges across agri-food, biomedical, and environmental domains.

Encapsulation and delivery are enabling technologies – they determine when, where, and how active ingredients function. At SEED, we develop polymeric, hybrid, and functional systems that protect sensitive bioactives, regulate their release, and enhance performance, safety, and sustainability. Our research is guided by both fundamental scientific inquiry and practical impact, with strong emphasis on scalability, circularity, and real-world deployment.

The SEED Lab adopts a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, working closely with agri-food scientists, engineers, microbiologists, social scientists, clinicians, industry partners, government agencies and policymakers. Beyond publications and patents, our goal is to translate innovation into technologies that contribute to a more resilient future.

We are committed to training the next generation of engineers and researchers, fostering curiosity, rigor, and responsibility. Whether you are a prospective student, collaborator, or industry partner, we invite you to explore our work and grow with us.
