Dr. Kim-Hui Yap received the
Bachelor Degree of Electrical Engineering (University Medal Winner and First
Class Honors) from the University of Sydney,
Australia, in 1998, and Ph.D. degree from the same university in 2002. Since
then, he has been a faculty member in Nanyang Technological University (NTU),
Singapore. His main research interests are image/video processing, media
content analysis, computer vision and computational intelligence. As the Group
Leader in Content-Based Analysis in the Center for Signal Processing, NTU, he has
worked on projects encompassing image/video content analysis and understanding,
media indexing and retrieval, and image processing and computer vision. He has more
than 60 articles in various international peer-reviewed journals, conference
proceedings and book chapters. He has also co-authored a book entitled
“Adaptive Image Processing: A Computational Intelligence Perspective, Second
Edition” to be published by CRC Press in 2009, and co-edited a book entitled
“Intelligent Multimedia Processing with Soft Computing” published by Springer-Verlag in 2005.
Dr. Yap has successfully
applied for and received funding from different agencies in recent years. These
include A*STAR, Science and Engineering Research Council, DSO National
Laboratories Singapore, and Academic Research Fund (AcRF),
NTU. He had been invited to present a tutorial at IEEE Symposium Series on
Computational Intelligence in Hawaii, USA in April 2007 (IEEE SSCI2007). He
currently serves as an Associate
Editor for IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine and an Editorial Board Member for
“The Open Electrical and Electronic Engineering Journal”, published by Bentham
Science Publishers Ltd. He was also the guest editor of the Special Issue
“Recent advances in content analysis for media computing” for the Journal of
Signal Processing Systems for Signal, Image, and Video Technology. He also
served as a guest associate editor for the IEICE Transactions on Fundamentals,
Special Section on Signal Processing in 2009. Dr. Yap served as the Treasurer
of the Signal Processing Society Chapter, IEEE Singapore Section from 2005-2007.
He was the Committee Member of the Computational Intelligence Society Chapter,
IEEE Singapore Section from 2004-2006.
Dr. Yap is
involved in the organization of various international conferences. He is the
Finance Chair of the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia. He also served
as the Special Session Chair, Publication Chair, Publicity Chair and Workshop
Organizer for various conferences including 2009 IEEE Pacific-Rim Conference on
Multimedia, 2007 International
Conference on Information, Communications and Signal Processing, 2009
MDM International Workshop on Mobile Media Retrieval, etc. He is also involved
as the Special Session Organizer, Session Chair and Technical Program Committee
Member for many other conferences. He has served as a reviewer for various
international journals and conferences, and as a grant
reviewer for Discovery Grants of Natural Science and Engineering Research
