Research Position Opening

Research Scientist/Research Associate (RA): City-Scale Digital Twin of Road Traffic to Increase Sustainability

A Research Associate (RA) position is available at the Parallel and Distributed Computing Lab (PDCL), College of Computing and Data Sciences (CCDS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. This joint project with Alibaba focuses on large-scale road traffic simulation in order to reduce emissions while increasing traffic efficiency. Achieving this goal requires accurate and up-to-date models of current real-world traffic conditions as well as methods for fast simulation to support real-time decision making and what-if analyses. Hence, methods will be developed for fast data-driven creation and calibration of traffic models, with an emphasis on approaches for data assimilation from real-time sources. Intelligent scheduling mechanisms to execute simulation runs in the cloud will ensure timely results, together with new approaches to support the parallelization of individual simulations by model analysis, variable model fidelity, and the use of hardware accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs).

Research Associate (RA): AI-Driven Combinatorial Optimization via Simulation

A Research Associate (RA) position is available at the Parallel and Distributed Computing Lab (PDCL), College of Computing and Data Sciences (CCDS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The project focuses on neural solvers for complex combinatorial optimization problems to support the decision-making in areas such as healthcare scheduling and supply chain delivery planning. As the candidate solutions must be evaluated using computationally intensive simulations, methods for reducing the cost of individual simulations and the number of candidate solutions to be evaluated will be developed to best serve the needs of the AI training process while minimizing computational cost. Approaches for fast and accurate data-driven calibration will ensure practical applicability of the identified solutions by reducing the sim-to-real gap. The project offers the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of the intersection between simulation, combinatorial optimization, and artificial intelligence.

About Modelling and Simulation Group at NTU

The Modelling and Simulation (M&S) group led by Prof Wentong Cai has been conducting impactful research in M&S over two decades.  The group has published extensively in top venues in the area such as ACM TOMACS, SMPT (Elsevier), IEEE TPDS, FGCS (Elsevier), JPDC (Elsevier), and ACM SIGSIM PADS and has won 12 Best Paper Awards in international conferences.  Recent ones include WSC’22, SIGSIM PADS’21, WSC’20, IEEE/ACM DS-RT’18, ACM SIGSIM PADS’18, and ACM SIGSIM PADS’17.  Many alumni of the group now work as Professors in leading universities in Europe and China or Research Engineers in leading IT companies world-wide such as Microsoft, Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei.

The research of the group mainly focuses on the intersection between Computer Science and M&S.  The current research interests include: performance and scalability of discrete event simulation, large-scale distributed virtual environment and cloud gaming, dynamic data-driven agent-based modelling and simulation, and agent-based simulation applications (e.g., crowd and traffic simulation).
