Research Position Openings

Background

The positions are under a large collaborative project with SIMTech, supported by A*STAR, Singapore, under RIE 2020 Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) IAP-PP scheme.  The project aims to develop a scalable Cyber-Physical Production System (CPPS) platform and contextual and intelligent decision support technologies to close the gaps that found in the current CPPS.

About the Position

We have open positions for two Research Fellows (RFs) and one Research Associate (RA).  The positions offer an opportunity to work on topics with real-world relevance in a large research team.  The RFs and RA will work on a work-package that aims to develop a unified framework to support simulation-based cyber-twin for production systems.  Issues such as symbiotic coupling between cyber-twin and production system, effective federating of cyber-twins, and cloud-based scalable execution mechanisms will be investigated.

The responsibilities of the position include:

-    Coordinating research activities (for RF only)

-    Conducting research as specified in the work-package

-    Preparation of research papers targeting high-quality conferences and journals in the relevant fields as well as presentation at conferences

Required qualifications:

-    For RF: PhD degree in computer science or related field

-    For RA: Master's degree in computer science or related field

-    Strong scientific publication record (for RF only)

-    Experience in discrete-event modelling and simulation, distributed systems, or data-driven applicaitons

-    Good knowledge of C++ or Java and at least one scripting language

-    Ability to work independently and with an international team

-    Excellent analytical, technical, and problem solving skills

-    Strong verbal and written English communication skills

An attractive remuneration based on experience and qualifications as well as a standard benefit package competitive with the industry will be provided for the successful applicant.  Singapore offers a very low tax rate (payable tax is $550 on first $40,000 + 7% on next $40,000).

Interested candidates should send their full application, including a resume, academic transcripts, and a cover letter to Prof Wentong Cai at aswtcai@ntu.edu.sg

About Modelling and Simulation Group at NTU

The Modelling and Simulation (M&S) group led by Prof Wentong Cai has been conducting impactful research in M&S over two decades.  The group has published extensively in top venues in the area such as ACM TOMACS, SMPT (Elsevier), IEEE TPDS, FGCS (Elsevier), JPDC (Elsevier), and ACM SIGSIM PADS and has won 12 Best Paper Awards in international conferences.  Recent ones include IEEE/ACM DS-RT’18, ACM SIGSIM PADS’18, and ACM SIGSIM PADS’17.  Many alumni of the group now work as Professors in leading universities in Europe and China or Research Engineers in leading IT companies world-wide such as Microsoft, Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei.

The research of the group mainly focuses on the intersection between Computer Science and M&S.  The current research interests include: performance and scalability of discrete event simulation, large-scale distributed virtual environment and cloud gaming, dynamic data-driven agent-based modelling and simulation, and agent-based simulation applications (e.g., crowd and traffic simulation).
