A/Prof Heng graduated in Medicine from the National University of Singapore in 1990. He joined Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 1996 after his residency. He underwent Cornea & Refractive Surgery Fellowship training at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, which has been repeatedly ranked among the top 3 Eye Hospitals in USA for the last 30 years. After his fellowship training, he was instrumental in introducing the Hospital Cornea Donation Programme to TTSH. He became NHG Eye Institute’s Head of Cornea Service in 2004 and subsequently was also appointed Head of Refractive Surgery in 2007. A/Prof Heng is a nationally and internationally recognised specialist in corneal diseases, refractive and cataract surgery.

As a cornea specialist, he is particularly experienced in performing LASIK & PRK. His other areas of interest are Corneal Transplantation, Excimer Laser PTK, Phakic Intraocular Lenses, Corneal Cross-linking, Keratoconus, Corneal Dystrophies, Recurrent Corneal Erosions, Contact Lens-related problems, and other diseases of the cornea and ocular surface. A/Prof Heng has published numerous medical articles as well as co-authored a book entitled Colour Atlas and Synopsis of Cornea and External Eye Diseases in 2003 which has benefited many Cornea fellows and trainees locally and internationally. He also holds teaching appointments as an Associate Professor at NUS YLL School of Medicine and NTU LKC School of Medicine.

From 2009 to 2013, A/Prof Heng was a Council member of the College of Ophthalmologists of Singapore and was elected the College President from 2014 to 2016. He is also the Deputy Medical Director of the Singapore Eye Bank since 2003. A/Prof Heng is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Ministry of Health Human Manpower Development Plan Overseas Fellowship, Asia Pacific Association of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Educator Award, and Spring Singapore Excellence Service Star Award
