Background Brief at Inauguration, October 2004
The Harvard Singapore Foundation, driven by committed alumni and supporters, will fund three major initiatives:
| (i) |
Scholarships and fellowships to Harvard University and other top institutions internationally & in Singapore for the study of NGO management & governance; |
| (ii) |
An Annual Leading Forum in Singapore with regional participation to foster an ongoing exchange of expertise and experience with the best NGO practitioners abroad; and |
| (iii) |
National awards to recognise role-model NGOs that demonstrate best practices in governance and management; |
These will be organised with our strategic partner, the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), the Singapore's body for promoting the spirit of volunteerism and giving to the community. An endowment has been set up by the Foundation which has been awarded the IPC status by IRA to fund such programmes.
Endorsing the new initiatives, Senior Minister Mr. Goh said: "I hope that through its various programmes – scholarships, forums and awards – the Foundation will help to provide thought leadership in NGO management and governance, and as a result play an important role in raising the quality of the NGO sector in Singapore. I am happy to commend the aims of the Foundation, and to serve as its Patron."
