Instructions on Registration of Course

REGISTRATION PERIOD
You should check your Registration Period. You are only allowed to register for course(s) during the period allocated to you.

All registration of courses must be finalised within the stipulated period. After the period, you are not allowed to add or drop any courses.

IMPORTANT

A course dropped within the registration period will not appear in your result slip and official transcript. But, for a course that has not been dropped within the registration period, you will be deemed to have sat and failed the course and a grade 'F' will be reflected in your result slip and official transcript.

PREPARATION FOR REGISTRATION
Class Timetable

You are required to refer to the class timetable when selecting your courses to avoid any clashes in your classes.

COURSEWORK STUDENTS
AU Requirement

If you have fulfilled your AU requirement for your coursework component of study, then you are not allowed to register any course. Please refer to the AU System to check for the AU required for your coursework component of study.

Maximum AU Allowed To Register Per Term

Selection of Elective

Selection of an elective is on a first-come-first-served basis. If you have chosen an elective which belongs to another programme, you will then be placed on a waiting list in the first instance. Allocation of electives will be made after the stipulated registration period and is done on a first-come-first-served basis.

Example : If you are a MSc(Communications Engineering) student, you have chosen elective E6123 Speech & Imaging Coding and elective E6326 Digital Television Systems. E6123 is offered by MSc(Communications Engineering) while E6326 is offered by MSc(Consumer Electronics). Your registration for E6123 will be confirmed there and then , but for E6326 you would be placed on the waiting list. Only after the end of course registration period would you be allocated for the course on the first-come-first-served basis.

You will be notified through email/GSLink after allocation has been made.

RESEARCH STUDENTS
Admission Before January 2000
 
Every research student has to take one enrichment course.

Admission In & After January 2000

A Master student has to take 1 specialisation course and 1 enrichment course.

A PhD student has to take 3 specialisation courses and 1 enrichment course.

With effect from Semester 2 2003-2004

The classification of courses has been removed. The new requirement is:

A Master student has to take a total of 2 courses.

A PhD student has to take a total of 4 courses.

With effect from Semester 1 2005-2006

A Master student has to take a total of 3 courses.

A PhD student has to take a total of 6 courses.

Important Note:

School may have additional or other requirements on courses to be taken by research students. Therefore, research students are strongly advised to check with their own School on the courses requirements.

Maximum Number of Courses Allowed To Register Per Term

For Master students, you are allowed to register up to 3 courses per term of study.

For PhD students, you are allowed to register up to 5 courses per term of study.

Allocation of Course

Priority is given to coursework students, then research students on first-come-first-served basis and you will be placed on waiting list.

The confirmation of course registered is after your School has granted the approval.

You would be informed through email to check whether the course are successfully registered.

Approval of Course(s) Registered

After registration of courses through the system, you are to print the Form and submit it to your School for approval of the courses which you have registered. Without the approval of your School or failing to get School's approval within the registration period, the courses you registered will be dropped.

To drop a course, you need not submit the form to your School for approval.

To add a course, you have to print out the Form and submit it for your School's approval. Without the approval of your School or failing to get School's approval within the add/drop period, no course will be added for you.

It is the responsibility of student to ensure that the Form is duly completed and submitted to the School in time for approval of the additional or replacement course.

Re-registration of a Course

If you wish to register for a course which you have not been successful previously due to the limitation of class size, you need not submit the form to your supervisor or School for approval again. The system has a record of your School's earlier approval. You just have to register that course online as per normal but without submission of the form.

If a course has been previously rejected by the School, you will not be allowed to re-register for that course.

RIGHT TO WITHDRAW COURSE
The University reserves the right to withdraw or change the class time table of any course listed in the Class Timetable. Classes may be rescheduled or cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances or low demand.

Students enrolled in a cancelled class will be notified through email.

WARNING
It is a serious offence to tamper with the record of another student. Disciplinary action will be taken for such an offence that may result in suspension or expulsion from the University.
EMAIL/GSLINK
You are reminded to check your student email account and GSLINK regularly as important messages regarding registration of courses or changes to the timetable will be conveyed to you through the system.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Graduate Studies Office will not accept any request to register or de-register course through email addressed to any staff member or account of the Graduate Studies Office. Such requests will be deemed null and void.
