Under an ambitious Smart Nation program. Singapore has become a test bed for the application of Big Data and lnternet of Things innovations and incubator for technologies transforming the way our cities will work in the future.

The backbone of Singapore's increasingly smart infrastructure is a fiber network spanning the 276-square-mi[e island, bringing high-speed lnternet to every home and office. lt's surprise that today Singaporeans average three mobile devices per person. The goal of the Smart Nation program is to turn Singapore into a Living laboratory, a place to test smart sotutions in crowded urban settings. ln one Singapore neighborhood, thousands of sensors installed on individuaI apartments to measure energy draw, waste production, and water usage in reaI time.

•Providing solutions for a growing urban habitat; manage infrastructure projects and partner with like-minded professionals whose complementary skill-set help deliver quality results

•Improving the quality of urban living; to cut ambient temperature by 4 deg C in residential estates; new building materials that absorb and convert excess heat for storage or other uses. Focus on developing new ways of creating space, e.g.underground facilities in basements and deep caverns, or through land reclamation and large floating structures.

•Maintaining stability and reliability of the nation's power grid, keeping energy prices affordable while developing environmentally sustainable energy system; namely solar power and how to achieve greater energy efficiency with green building technologies.

•Air-conditioners may one day be fitted with membranes rather than compressors that can significantly reduce power consumption.

•Meet the expected doubling of demand for water by 2060, by lowering energy consumption of desalination, leading to cost savings.

•Rethink how we use our roads and other spaces. We need to look into different transport modes and better harmonise our built and natural environments. In the area of sustainability, energy storage is a key element in diversifying energy sources and integrating more renewable energy sources and tap new synergies in the energy-land nexus. Traffic control system that can reduce travel time and congestion on urban roads. “Iterative Tuning” system studies an area’s historical traffic patterns to adjust its traffic lights’ daily signal schedules.

•Software to monitor energy consumption in Singapore’s buildings; reduce un-contracted capacity charges and automatically adjust electricity use throughout each day to lower costs. Electricity retailers can also benefit.  


Dr Kang, Kok Hin

Kok Hin earned his 1st Class Honours Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from Monash University, Australia under the Public Service Commission scholarship. He obtained Post graduate Diplomas in Business Studies and Business Administration from UK, and also graduated with a Master of Engineering from NUS Engineering, followed by an MBA and a Doctor of Philosophy from NUS in Building Science.

Kok Hin is currently the President of the Institution of Facilities Management Singapore, and is also under the Chartered Engineers of UK & Australia, and a corporate member of IFMA, USA and BIFM, UK. Dr Kang has been in the property and estate management and maintenance consultancy services related industries for more than 30 years and possess in-depth knowledge about providing strategic and operational facility management services. After spending 8 years of engineering design and maintenance services with the then Public Works of Singapore, Kok Hin joined the Mandarin Singapore Group for another 9 years as its Director of Projects to help set up many hotels locally and overseas. When he was with Centrepoint Property Ltd subsequently, he was involved in property and facilities establishment, property maintenance and management services. Thereafter, he was posted to Bangalore, Southern India and was involved in the construction, lease and facilities management of a state-of-the-art Technopark.

Kok Hin is currently with a multinational engineering, architectural design & FM firm in Singapore and has helped them manage over 1,000 buildings in Singapore with a gross floor area of 9 million square metres, plus approximately 3 million square metres of gross floor area in China providing strategic, tactical and Operational Facilities Management, Education and also Training services to MNCs and government clients. He has been actively offering lectures in Project and Facilities Management subjects to varsities and training schools of Singapore over the past 5 years.

Given a 3 days notice before course commencement, companies may replace participants who have signed up for the course. Terms and conditions apply.


There is no replacement for participant utilising SkillsFuture Credit. Participant to cancel their SkillsFuture Credit claim with WDA.
