This section will describe the various components that make up the C-ONE system. It details what the consumer, merchant and NETS need to have in order to carry out a CashCard payment over the Internet.
Consumer (Students/Staff)
To carry out Cyber Shopping with a CashCard, a consumer needs to have the following components installed into his Internet-enabled personal computer.
- An E-Wallet
The Electronic Wallet (E-Wallet) is a piece of software that will interact with the CashCard to enable it to make a payment to the merchant. The E-Wallet can be downloaded for FREE at the NETS website at http://www.nets.com.sg/- A Smartcard Reader
A Smartcard reader needs to be used together with the CashCard. Smartcard readers need to be certified by NETS to be suitable for C-ONE. These Smartcard Readers can be purchased from computer shops, petrol stations, etc. The Smartcard readers issued to Singapore ONE pilot users as been certified as suitable for C-ONE as well.- A CashCard
The shopper needs to have a CashCard in order to carry out cyber-shopping. The consumer can buy CashCards from any branches of DBS Bank, Keppel Bank, OCBC Bank Group, Overseas Union Bank, POSBank, Tat Lee Bank, United Overseas Bank, or any Singapore Post outlets or CashCard Auto Machines(CAM). When the cash value is low, consumers can top-up their CashCard at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), CashCard Service Terminals (CSTs) or CashCard Auto Machines (CAMs). The CashCard can also be used for ERP, shopping at retailer outlets and making phone calls.
Merchant (NTU)
The merchant will be required to have a C-ONE payment component integrated into their web server before their system can accept CashCard transaction. The C-ONE component comprises of a software called the Merchant Payment Gateway (MPG) and a digital certificate issued by NETS' Certificate Authority (CA).
NETS
NETS' backend is the heartland of the whole system. It provides a series of checks to the whole system, e.g. checks for attempts to use fraud, blacklisted or faulty cards, checks by the CashCard to ensure that it is really talking to NETS' system and not somebody's system, and there are also mutual checks between NETS' and the merchant's system.
NETS' system also stores all C-ONE transaction in its database. The database will be used for settlement and crediting the merchant's account the next working day.
The C-ONE system uses SSL communication with 192-bit encryption. Even browsers in the US currently only have a 128-bit encryption strength. Therefore, coupled with the CashCard's existing security you can rest assured that your transaction is secure and private.
All successful transaction records are stored
in the consumer's personal computer and on the CashCard. In addition,
the merchant and NETS will have copies of the consumer's successful
transaction in their database.
As of 12th September 98, nineteen merchants
have accepted CashCard on their websites. More are expected to
come do so soon. Please refer to NETS website (http://www.nets.com.sg/)
for the latest additions.

The potential of C-ONE is great. It allows merchants to sell almost anything on the Web, e.g. orders for pizzas, orders for books, pay to view videos, payment of bills, purchase of newspaper archive, etc.
