Dear Students,

In today’s issue, let us zoom in on the chemical industry in Singapore. Over the years, Singapore has positioned itself as a sustainable and leading hub for chemicals manufacturing. Just in 2022, the industry had exported over S$80 billion in chemicals and chemical products, while providing employment opportunities for over 25,000 people. With Jurong Island being the key industrial complex for the sector, it has attracted many chemical firms to set up their major operations in the country. In a sector offering great employment and growth opportunities, here are some tips to prepare yourself for a future in the dynamic chemical industry.

STAY INFORMED

As with most industries, the chemical industry is no stranger to evolving technologies and changing market demands. It is important for one to keep updated with emerging trends, advancements, and shifts in the industry priorities.

STEP INTO THE INDUSTRY

Gain practical experience through internships or part-time work with chemical companies. Internships allows you to apply theoretical knowledge, developing problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Employers value candidates who can seamlessly transition from theory to practice.

PRACTICAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Developing practical skills is essential for success in the chemical industry. Beyond theoretical knowledge, the industry looks at soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities. An understanding of industry-relevant software tools including process simulation software, chemical process modelling, and data analysis tools can also give you an edge in navigating complex chemical processes and operations. The ability to communicate such technical information clearly through written and oral communication skills proves to be crucial in the industry.

While academic knowledge is fundamental, success in the chemical industry demands a multifaceted approach. Practical experience, effective communication skills, and active networking are all essential components. By engaging actively and staying attuned to industry trends, you position yourself for a rewarding career in the dynamic field of the chemical industry.
