Welcome to the world of Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), a domain where individuals take on the role of guardians, ensuring safety and well-being in the workplace. While some might associate WSH professionals primarily with construction, it actually goes far beyond this industry. In this issue, we'll explore the significance of WSH practices and the dynamic role of a WSH Officer. Also, read on to the end about for insights from Ms Goh Shiao Yen (CEE, Class of 2009), a registered WSH professional in the healthcare & life science sector, as she shares on her thoughts on why she pursued this role.

Ms Goh Shiao Yen

Ms Goh Shiao Yen, a seasoned professional in Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) management.

 

Shiao Yen, currently the Singapore HSE Advisor at Bayer South East Asia (BSEA), boasts a distinguished career with pivotal HSE roles in various industries such as oil & gas, and service & facilities management. Her experience includes developing HSE strategies, leading HSE initiatives regionally and ensuring compliance with regulations. Shiao Yen holds a specialised diploma in WSH Course, excels in HSE system management, reporting, and cultivates a safety-centric workplace. 

 

 

Why did I choose a career in WSH?

Through this profession, I play a part in supporting the health & wellbeing for all employees. It makes my work much more rewarding, knowing that everyone comes to work and return home to their loved ones safely. 

 

What are some common misconceptions about WSH?

Some may relate WSH roles to only apply in the construction industry. Well, it is not the truth! WSH plays a crucial role in every industry because workplace health & safety of employees is paramount. WSH is all about sensibly managing risks to protect employees and business. Good Health & Safety Management is characterised by strong leadership involving internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, health & safety is also an essential part of the movement towards sustainable development for business, country, and the world.

 

My advice to students who are considering a career in WSH.

As a WSH professional, you would be passionate, adaptable/flexible, meticulous and possess the courage to challenge new frontiers.
