Dear Students,

What’s the future of healthcare industry in Singapore looking like? With a rapidly ageing society driving the demand for healthcare and eldercare services, it is creating more job opportunities, making it one of the largest and fastest growing industry in the country. In today’s issue, let’s explore the evolving trends within the healthcare industry, with a focus on Long-Term Care (LTC) and integration of technology.

LONG-TERM CARE (LTC)

A service catered to the elderly who may be frail and require supervision or assistance in managing their daily activities.

Prior to the pandemic, Long-Term Care (LTC) in Singapore has already been evolving in response to the growing demands, health and personal care needs of our ageing population. Initially, the focus was on institutionalised and highly medicalised custodial care. As the industry progressed, it introduced new services such as community living, integrated home and daycare services, and home care tech platforms. Now, we are entering the era of LTC 3.0, where digital technology will play a paramount role in providing efficient and seamless access to various care and service settings – both online and offline.

You may also notice the progress towards LTC 3.0 with these collaborations that happened this year:

·        A web-based health management system integrating technology with home care services, including smart home sensors, medication adherence, and meal planning and delivery.

·        Sensor-enabled fall detection system.

·        Utilisation of telehealth for remote monitoring of vitals, assessing mental and emotional well-being, and delivery of care services.

·        Ongoing trials to introduce companion robots developed in other countries, such as Japan, into nursing homes and community hospitals to improve seniors’ social engagement.
