Dear Students,

Maritime is a vital industry at the nexus of world trade and the global supply chain, transporting over 80% of international trade. It sustains our daily lives and helps countries prosper. At the heart of this industry’s growth is a skilled talent pool.

In this regard, the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) has been strengthening the maritime workforce by joining hands with industry partners to drive the MaritimeONE Scholarship Programme. Introduced in 2007, the programme identifies and nurtures promising tertiary students with a desire to pursue a career in maritime. Students across all disciplines and from any year of study are welcome to apply.

This year, we saw a record 60 MaritimeONE Scholarships totalling S$1.8 million awarded to recipients from both maritime and non-maritime related disciplines such as engineering, computer science, data science and artificial intelligence, business and law.

You might be wondering if maritime is indeed the right sector for you to embark on your career. Let’s hear from one of NTU’s MaritimeONE scholars, Li Tz Yuan, as he shares more about his maritime journey.

Description automatically generatedMy voyage into the maritime industry first began when I enrolled in the Diploma in Marine & Offshore Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. During my studies, I was fortunate to gain invaluable experience through a six-month internship with a marine and offshore service provider. As a business development engineer in the ship brokerage division, I helped to establish and maintain strategic partnerships with 51 marine companies across 37 countries, including shipowners and managers of diverse vessel types such as chemical tankers, bulk carriers, tugboats, and offshore support vessels.

As I began taking on more responsibilities, such as spearheading marketing campaigns and strategies for vessel and port machinery, I gained a strong sense of fulfilment in driving this essential sector. My growing passion to contribute to the maritime industry’s growth eventually led me to return to the company as a business mentor to impart key learnings to my juniors.
