Dear Students,

The Hospitality, Tourism & MICE sector in Singapore remains a source of valuable opportunities for students. With a proven track record of hosting some of Asia’s most prominent events, the industry has consistently delivered innovation solutions. This dynamic environment serves as a catalyst for the transfer of knowledge, ideas, and connections, driving new potentials for businesses involved in Business Travel and Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions (BTMICE).

Singapore has seen a surge in demand for leisure and business travel, with the hotel industry as a key player in the tourism sector. Based on past year, the hotel industry contributed over 20% of our total Tourism Receipts (TR) and employed a significant 44% of the tourism workforce as of December 2022.

To aid its continued growth, a Job Transformation Map (JTM) was rolled-out for the Hotel Industry. The JTM delves into how technology as well as global and local trends will impact job roles and skills over the next three years. The JTM will guide employers and employees on the skills and talent required to remain competitive, innovative, and sustainable for the industry to garner new opportunities with a future-ready workforce.

Through JTM, four megatrends were identified that will have a deep impact on the nature of hotel jobs such as changing guest expectations as lifestyles evolve, sustainability, an increasingly competitive landscape and changing workforce aspirations. It also analysed 87 current job roles, of which 40 are likely to be redesigned.

Ever been to a hotel with a room service robot? With increasing automation enabled by AI, IoT, and robotics, seven out of the 40 roles are expected to require extensive redesign. These include sales coordinator, reservations officer and housekeeping coordinator roles.

The other 33 roles still require human intervention but may be augmented by technology. For example, the engineers and housekeeping managers, which require moderate redesign to equip job holders with new knowledge and abilities.

As for the 47 job roles that continue to be highly dependent on human intervention, some upskilling will still be required. For instance, an operations manager who uses property management systems (PMS) should acquire new capabilities in consumer intelligence and sustainable procurement to develop strategic plans.
