Dear Students,

In today's era of rapid environmental change, understanding sustainability is crucial, not just for businesses, but for young leaders and thinkers too. The Singapore Green Plan 2030 has heightened the importance of sustainable practices, especially in sectors like manufacturing. Here's a peek into the manufacturing world: it consists of resource-intensive stages like material extraction, water and energy consumption during production, waste generation, and transporting of raw materials or finished products.

SUSTAINABILITY’S SIGNIFICANCE IN MANUFACTURING

Did you know that the electricity usage of the manufacturing sector has been on the rise since 2012? Such trends emphasise the burgeoning energy requirements and highlight why it is so critical to incorporate sustainable methods to save our resources and lessen environmental impact.

Why should this matter to you, our next generation? The planet you are going to inherit will be shaped by the decisions made today. It is no longer about manufacturing companies viewing sustainability as "a good to have", it is now "a need to have". The future of our world depends on it.

EMPOWERING MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY IN THE SHIFT TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

While large corporations have the tools to navigate sustainability and move towards carbon neutrality, many Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) often find themselves grappling with limited resources and knowledge. This calls for a need: Singapore must develop a strong expertise in sustainability. We need Sustainability Managers, Consultants, and Engineers ready to step up. Picture this: Singapore as the epicentre of Excellence in Sustainability in Southeast Asia. A place where our talent, including NTU graduates, becomes global sustainability leaders.

The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) is aiding SMEs in their green transition. Drawing inspiration from their efforts, you too can begin taking steps towards becoming leaders in sustainability.

Envision a near future where:

        NTU students drive eco-awareness campaigns,

        Lead research on sustainability gaps,

        Advise companies on green strategies,

Collaborate with experts for practical solutions,

And pioneer initiatives recognising sustainable excellence.

NTU students, it is time to take charge. You can be part of this transformation and shape the future of sustainability in manufacturing. As the leaders of tomorrow, I encourage you to prioritise sustainability. Together with the SMF, we can champion a greener future. The time to act is now.
