Dear Students,

Recess week is just around the corner, so quizzes, assignments and project deadlines are inevitably piling up for many of you. But even so, how does your typical day look like? Amid your busy schedules, do you still try to relax by perhaps scrolling through TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms during your downtime?

While some of you might be gearing up your resume for upcoming winter/credit-bearing internships or that first full-time job, others may see that only as a future concern. But did you know that at any stage of your academic journey, you can start crafting your portfolio? Build your resume showcasing your achievements as you progress through your time here at NTU. Cultivate this habit to work on your portfolio consistently so that you’ll be ready any time you need to send submit an application to a potential employer to score your dream internship/job!

It's time to start levelling up your career preparation!

LinkedIn – I’m sure many of you may have heard or are already on the “professional” social networking platform. If you are not, you really should. Are you utilising the platform to its full potential? As a student, how can you leverage LinkedIn to kick start your career journey? Read on for a few tips!

1. MAKE YOURSELF STANDOUT

What sets your LinkedIn profile apart from your resume? Potential employers can learn so much more about you through the LinkedIn profile you have curated. A resume typically condenses all our experiences, skills, and achievements into 1-2 pages. But for LinkedIn, it goes deeper into who we are as an individual with the added recommendations, interests section, and posts that we upload or interact with.

Tip: Instead of just stating your course of study in your headline, add more on your aspirations and areas of interest.

2. SOURCE FOR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

With over 63 million companies globally listed on LinkedIn, the world is your oyster. Whether you are looking for local/overseas internships or jobs, you can easily filter out the opportunities that are available to you. Be sure to toggle on your ‘Job Alerts’ so that LinkedIn can recommend jobs based on your profile and activity!

While you can apply for as many jobs as you want on LinkedIn, don’t stop there. You can also look via CareerAxis and other job portals that are listed here.

3. CONNECT WITH INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

Follow the companies that you would like to work for and connect with employees that are already in the organisation. Give yourself an edge by sending a personalised message when you invite them to connect. Now, when they make a post, it’s your chance to react, engage, comment and more!

LinkedIn also provides a unique platform where professionals connect with other like-minded individuals. Articulate your personal experiences, career aspirations and motivations through LinkedIn posts and you can potentially draw positive attention to your profile! If you have attended an event hosted by CAO or an organisation, these are opportunities for you to share more after your participation! Remember to include appropriate hashtags and tag the relevant company pages and/or recruiters that you have met during the event. This increases your chances of getting discovered by company representatives and industry professionals!

4. STAY UPDATED ON INDUSTRY TRENDS/OPPORTUNITIES

It’s a treasure trove of industry news, insights, and articles on LinkedIn. If you're unsure about what to post on LinkedIn, consider reading more articles and posts on the platform, and then repost them with your thoughts. This shows your genuine interest in the organisation and also showcases your thought process, and how you continue to keep yourself well-informed about the latest industry trends.

5. FOLLOW NTU CAREER & ATTACHMENT OFFICE (CAO)

Catch up and stay-up-to date with CAO’s events, workshops, opportunities, and benefit from our regular posts featuring valuable career tips and industry updates. It’s also a place to expand your network by connecting with alumni and potential employers who have partnered with CAO.
