Remote vs Office: What's the Work Environment for you?

By Mr Ang Yuit, Deputy President,

Association of Small and Medium Enterprises

Greetings to all NTU students!

Are you contemplating the ideal work setting for your soon-to-be professional life? Remote work and flexible hours are the trending topics right now, but let's pause for a moment and explore these options more deeply.

The notion of working from the comfort of home may initially seem enticing. However, thriving in such an environment requires substantial self-discipline and motivation. Can you maintain productivity without the structured environment an office provides? It's worth considering especially when it is your first jump into working life.

If you lean towards introversion, working alone may be well-suited for you. Research suggests that introverts often adapt well to remote work conditions. However, if you're an extrovert who thrives on social interaction, a traditional office setting may be more energising for you.

Workplace relationships matter more than you might think. Success in any job isn’t solely about your skills or performance; it often hinges on the rapport you build with your colleagues. The nuances of interpersonal dynamics are easier to navigate face-to-face and harder to develop in a remote setting.

It's also worth noting that if a role can be performed remotely, companies might start considering candidates from other countries where labour costs are lower. This could make your job less secure in the long run.

Before you make any decisions about the kind of work environment you prefer, it's important to engage in some self-reflection. What truly motivates you in a work setting? If you do not have an idea, be open to try various options or a hybrid working environment where you get to experience both environments. Also, actively network and speak with representatives from organisations of varying sizes across sectors to better understand the work environments that are being offered. That way, you can assess if they align with your personal goals.

You might like to consider the unique opportunities that come with working in a small or medium-sized enterprise (SMEs)! Here at ASME, many of our member companies provide internships and job opportunities that offer close collaboration with the head of the business like the boss or the senior manager. Such experiences are often less accessible in larger corporations.  You could also get to be exposed to a wide range of work experience in an SME, compared to a narrower field in a larger corporation.

ASME is also an Approved-in-Principle (AIP) partner for the Global Ready Talent (GRT) initiative, offering internships with a minimum monthly remuneration of SGD1000.
