Dear Students,

This is the season when many of you will be graduating or looking for an internship. As you embark on your search, what are some top priorities that come to mind? If what you seek is an industry that is dynamic and purposeful, one that is committed to developing your potential while offering newer career pathways, now is an opportune time to consider joining the maritime sector. Responsible for carrying 80% of world trade, the industry presents graduates like yourself an exceptional opportunity to maximise your potential.

The industry is embracing a new wave of innovation, transforming to become more sustainable and efficient. This ranges from harnessing new technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT and data analytics to the safe handling of greener fuels onboard ships. While these are critical to the sector’s development, the true success of an international maritime centre hinges not on advanced infrastructure, but a skilled workforce that is adaptive to emerging and future industry challenges.

As the focal point of the industry, the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) created the MaritimeONE platform to bring together diverse companies from across the sector. This allows the talent pool to experience the industry at different junctures of their lives.

One such example is the MaritimeONE Scholarship Programme.

Open to all disciplines, the scholarship provides recipients with invaluable opportunities such as mentorships, internships, and networking opportunities. It is also open to students in any year of study, which means you can apply for this scholarship whether you are a freshman or a senior.

Over the past two years, S$2.8 million in MaritimeONE scholarships have been

awarded to a multidisciplinary pool of 100 recipients from maritime, business, law

and STEM fields such as data analytics, computer science and engineering.

Students with the right aptitude and attitude for a future in maritime may also look forward to applying for the MaritimeONE Bursary Fund, which SMF launched in June this year with a $1 million gift from leading shipping company Pacific Carriers Limited (PCL). The bursary is intended to help academically qualified Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, who are pursuing maritime-related studies or intend to pursue a career in maritime. It will be open for applications in the third quarter of this year, for students of any discipline at Singapore’s public universities, polytechnics, and the Institute of Technical Education.

For those who wish to augment classroom learning with industry experience and connections, the MaritimeONE Internship Programme places students across a wide variety of roles from chartering to financing to data science, and more. This summer, we placed 62 students across 30 companies.

Whether you are looking for an internship or your first job, leverage the MaritimeONE Career Portal, a one-stop resource that connects talent with the industry.

With a mission to develop a sustainable pipeline of maritime talent, SMF is playing a vital role in rallying the industry together to accelerate workforce transformation. Through the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), SMF is piloting job redesign projects to make certain technical roles more attractive and accessible to the talent pool, while increasing their productivity. An intensive industry consultation is also underway to identify the skills that the maritime workforce of the future needs, and to position Singapore strongly in the face of global competition for maritime talent. Maritime is a sector with a compelling proposition across your career stages.
