Dear Students,

A GREENER WORLD FOR EVERYONE

Green and sustainability topics have garnered much attention in recent years, and it is essential to reflect on how engineers can contribute to creating a greener world for everyone. With the world's population growing and natural resources depleting, it becomes increasingly important to focus on sustainable practices and technology. Hence, in celebration of World Engineering Day 2023 on 4 March, IES Women in Science, Engineering and Research (WiSER) took the opportunity to collaborate on a joint webinar with women engineers from Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII) and other countries on the topic, “A Greener World for Everyone”.

Indeed, you can aspire to join this profession to play a critical role in creating a greener world by developing sustainable infrastructure, designing more energy-efficient buildings, and creating renewable energy systems.

To create a sustainable environment, engineers need to work collaboratively with other professionals, such as scientists, policymakers, and community leaders. They must also prioritise sustainability in their work and use their expertise to educate others on sustainable practices, and even develop solutions to environmental problems, such as waste reduction, clean water access, and air pollution.

It is imperative for engineers to embrace new technologies and practices that prioritise sustainability. Some ways in which engineers accomplish this includes designing smart grids that use renewable energy sources, developing carbon capture and storage systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and creating sustainable transportation systems. Such efforts ensure a better future for everyone and leave a positive impact on the world. This is a critical goal that engineers can achieve through collaboration, sustainable practices, and technological innovation.

THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN ENGINEERS IN INDUSTRY 4.0 ERA: PROMOTING WOMEN ENGINEERS IN ASEAN

The role of engineers is becoming increasingly important in the Industry 4.0 era, but women remain underrepresented in the field, particularly in ASEAN countries. Women engineers face unique challenges such as a lack of female role models, cultural barriers, and a lack of policies and programmes that support women in the workplace. Despite the challenges, women engineers in ASEAN can leverage the increasing demand for engineering talent and the growing recognition of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.

To promote the advancement of ASEAN women engineers, targeted initiatives are needed, such as a greater focus on education and training, policies and programmes to support women in the workplace, and a cultural shift that recognises and values the contributions of women engineers.

During the 40th Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO) Woman Engineers Summit session in December 2022, we actively and openly discussed the challenges and opportunities for women engineers in the Industry 4.0 era, as well as promoting women engineers in ASEAN countries.
