Highlights of the week:
For more career opportunities from various industries, please
access Career Axis. Dear Students, Finally, the exam has ended!! To the graduating cohort,
congratulations for completing the final leap as you
springboard to your new endeavour! For those who are still actively searching for job or internship
opportunities, delay no more! Step up and step out to seize the chances
presented and check out the job highlights below within the Consumer
Business, Information & Communications Technology, and Media &
Marketing sectors.
Be Open-Minded No matter whether you a fresh graduate and/or an undergraduate,
it is vital to broaden your horizons and look beyond your discipline when
searching for a job. Below are some tips: 1.
Develop transferrable
skills: Hone competencies and skills that can be used across different
industries and job roles. E.g., Transferrable skills such as problem-solving,
communication, critical thinking, leadership, and project management skills. 2. Research on industries: Conduct research and read up on
industries that may not seemingly be related to your discipline but can
benefit from your skill set. E.g., if you have a degree in English, your
skills can be applied in consumer business & eCommerce, ICT, banking
& finance, healthcare, consulting, and many more industries apart from
the top-of-mind and more relatable sector like media & marketing. 3. Network: Stay connected with your seniors or alumni and network
with professionals in different industries to gain insights into what job
opportunities are available and how your skills can be utilised. Be proactive
in attending job fairs (have you logged in for NTU Virtual GradRecruit 2023?),
recruitment talks, workshops, industry conferences, and online networking
events as they can be a great way to stay in the know for better career
planning and decision making. 4. Be open-minded: While you may be focused on scoring your dream
job in fields directly related to your course of study, there may be
opportunities available in other industries that can offer valuable
experience and lead to future opportunities. Remember, a ‘career is a journey
and not a final destination’. 5. Consider internships: Even as a fresh graduate you may consider
internships or entry-level positions in industries outside of your
discipline. This can be a great way to gain experience and exposure to
different industries while also building your resume and skill set. E.g., you
are a Philosophy graduate and decides to enter an IT Consultancy company as
an entry-level Graduate Trainee. The programme provides a 6-month structured
training to equip you with in-demand skills and technologies to help you
transit into your dream role and industry. Overall, it's important to be open-minded and explore job
opportunities beyond your discipline. With the right mindset and approach,
you can find a fulfilling career path that utilises your skills and
experience. Where and How to Search? Searching for job opportunities? Besides
looking at LinkedIn, JobStreet, etc., you can start
off with our CareerAxis
portal, which focuses on jobs and internship harnessed directly from
employers with intent to hire NTU undergraduates and fresh graduates. Select ‘More Search Options’ and filter by ‘Employer
Industry’ to check out various job or internship openings available. Even
if the sector may not seem to match your interest, you never know what ‘gems’
are hidden for your discovery! I have come across many students who came for
consultation suggesting that there are too few job opportunities on the
portal. On the contrary, with just a little more openness and willingness to
browse through the available opportunities in various sectors, you can also
get struck with that ‘aha’ moment. In addition, don’t be struck by imposter syndrome! Avoid
screening yourself out thinking that an opening is too challenging or your
odds of being shortlisted is low. Instead, go forward with a ‘Just do it’
mindset so long you have the passion and interest for the role and company.
Sometimes, over thinking may do you more harm – slowing you down in your job
search process or hitting you with regret later thinking about the
possibilities of attaining your dream job or entering a company if you have
tried. And
remember, if opportunity doesn't knock, build a door! Finally, if you are keen to build your career in
Consumer Business, Media & Marketing and/or Maritime & Shipping
industries and wishes to know more insights, its career opportunities and/or
need help for an upcoming interview, you may simply
book an appointment with me via HERE or drop me your request directly via my email stated below. Wishing you the very best and till the
next time! This week’s e-blast is
