Keeping Up in the Post-AI World

Dear Students,

Been hearing more about ChatGPT recently? In case you haven’t, it is an AI Chatbot that has been making headlines due to its ability to hold natural conversations, answer questions, and even write software. With its remarkable abilities, ChatGPT is just one example of how AI will revolutionise the future of work.

In a post-AI and post-pandemic world, you’ll find undergraduates like yourself competing against the world and supercomputers. The world has changed since you matriculated and will continue to change even more. As you are reading this article, new apps and websites are being launched in the market; replacing jobs and, in some cases, entire industries. Just 10 years back, ride-hailing services like Uber and Grab forever changed the taxi industry. Now, such transformation is bull-rushing into countless other industries, spearheaded by the rise of AI.

There are both intended and unintended consequences of such a seismic shift in the global and local economy – but one thing is for sure, a savvy job seeker with robust skillsets will warrant success in more ways than one.

At the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME), our member companies offer internships that can provide you the exposure and skillset to stay robust and relevant in the post-AI and post-pandemic world. When you intern at a local SME, you are often given roles and responsibilities that may be hard to come by when interning at an MNC. As an intern in a smaller and nimbler company, you are not only more valuable and appreciated; you will also have the flexibility to influence your personal growth during the internship. Most importantly, you will most likely be working closely with the founder of the company, where you will be able to experience the cutting edge of entrepreneurship, and the values held dear to the founders. Who knows, you, too, might be inspired to be an entrepreneur one day. These skills and values will be imbued into you beyond what any resume can truly reflect, giving you a genuine opportunity to be a robust talent anywhere in the world you might choose to be.

ASME is an Approved-in-Principle (AIP) partner for Global Ready Talent (GRT), working with local companies to take on locals on internship programmes with a min. remuneration of SGD1000 per month.
