Dear Students,

Are you looking for an internship? While many of you may be exploring opportunities with corporates and MNCs, startups can also provide a valuable learning platform you shouldn’t overlook.

In this week’s digest, we speak with third-year Mathematical Sciences (Statistics) student Kaneko Yoshiki about his experience with SGInnovate’s Summation programme, which matches candidates with emerging technology startups.

Tell us about your apprenticeship experience.

I did my apprenticeship at Allozymes, a biotech startup focused on developing novel enzymes via its proprietary platform technology. My apprenticeship at Allozymes allowed me to pursue my interests in machine learning through work with natural language processing, specifically in dealing with protein sequences where we can gather insights into their activity levels, leading to greater efficiency, novel interactions, and more.

By developing novel enzymes, we can revolutionise the way complex natural products are manufactured, impacting industries from cosmetics to food and environmental science.

What was it like interning with a startup?

At Allozymes, I was given autonomy and responsibility in my assigned work. This meant I had to pick things up quickly and learn along the way – it is an exciting journey, because it keeps you on your toes, and you’re always looking for something to learn so you can improve and bring more value to your own work.

In addition, as there were multiple projects running concurrently at Allozymes, it motivated me to pick up many skills and level up as quickly as possible. The lean staffing structure also encouraged a flatter hierarchy, which promoted communication and collaboration. As a result, I interacted and worked with people outside of the data team often and could easily see the impact my work could bring.

What did you learn from being a part of the Summation Programme?

During my time here, I have learned what it means to be a part of a startup, where things are fast-paced. Thanks to the autonomy I get at work, I learned to build my own roadmap of what I can accomplish and understand how I can pace myself through the process. Working in a startup like Allozymes also pushed me to keep an open mind to different possibilities at work and has given me a wider perspective on the many different areas of growth I can pursue.

Any advice to students who are thinking about joining the Summation Programme?

Don’t hesitate to jump into it and hit the ground running. SGInnovate’s Summation programme is an excellent platform to dive into projects that would otherwise be rare and hard to come by. The opportunity to dive deep into hands-on emerging technology projects means every day at work is different and exciting.
