Dear
Students, The retail
sector in Singapore holds a significant economic footprint. In 2022, it
contributed S$7.3 billion to the nation's economy and provided employment to
over 160,000 individuals, making up about 4.2% of the Singapore’s workforce. The Jobs
Transformation Map (JTM), launched by Workforce Singapore (WSG) and
Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), emerges as a strategic guide for retail
companies, equipping them to prepare for the future. The JTM's primary goal
is to ensure that the workforce within the retail sector is well-equipped
with essential skills to meet the evolving demands of this dynamic industry. To
sustain the sector's ability to attract and retain talent while fostering the
creation of high-quality job opportunities, an extensive study was conducted.
This study aimed to identify the future trends that impact the retail sector
and anticipate the requisite changes in future job roles and skillsets
necessary to align with the evolving business landscape. Four key
trends are propelling change in the retail sector: shifting consumer
preferences, the emergence of innovative retail models, the integration of
data analytics and technological advancements, and the growing necessity to
establish a resilient supply chain. In
response to these dynamic trends, the JTM report introduces a strategy for
workforce transformation, which includes training, job redesign, and the
establishment of skills-based career pathways. This strategy empowers
employees to concentrate on value-added tasks and contribute proactively to
the growth of their respective businesses. Amid
these transformative trends, nine emerging roles have surfaced, each
demanding a new set of skillsets while providing fresh career opportunities
for students like you. For instance, roles like "Product
Innovators" and "Sustainability Specialists" require skills in
brand storytelling, omni-channel management, and expertise in sustainability
practices such as carbon footprint management. The JTM report also
highlighted existing job roles, such as sales associates and store managers,
which are expected to undergo significant changes due to evolving consumer
demands and advancements in technology. To
empower jobseekers and current retail employees to adapt to these changes,
the Jobs-Skills Integrator for Retail (JSIT-R) has been established. By means
of career awareness workshops and training programmes, JSIT-R is dedicated to
bridging skill gaps, facilitating job redesign, and consolidating essential
competencies. This initiative addresses the challenge faced by employees who
may lack the requisite skills to meet the evolving demands of the business
landscape. In
summary, navigating emerging skillsets within the retail sector is a critical
endeavour in Singapore, and the JTM serves as a valuable guide for the sector
to prepare for the future and ensure the workforce is equipped with the
essential skills needed to thrive in this dynamic industry. Students who opt
to join the retail sector can also be assured that such initiatives are in
place to provide continuous learning and upskilling opportunities, enabling
you to nurture and build the needed competencies to strive in the retail
industry. Interested
