Dear Students, The
Building and Construction Authority is working with the Built Environment
sector to push ahead with industry transformation. One of the key
transformation areas is to accelerate decarbonisation efforts by achieving
low emission buildings and districts with efficient building management
systems. Jobs in the sector have been re-designed to support
transformation efforts like this. Shermeen from Surbana Jurong shares
her experience over the past 2 years where she had the opportunity to wear
multiple hats as a Deputy Project Manager and Civil & Structural Engineer
in projects adapting to climate change. The
NTU alumni had the opportunity to work on a key project which includes
conceptual design, detailed engineering, tender evaluation, and construction
management for a renewable energy facility. The project includes
ground-mounted and floating PV, wind turbines, thermal energy storage and
more. As the different types of renewable energy systems are at different
levels of maturity, different approaches were adopted. For example, solar is
mature and there are international codes and handbooks available, thus the
objective is to design a cost-efficient system and maximise solar power
generation. On the other hand, there are nascent systems like wave energy,
where Shermeen works with the team to develop custom-built equipment for the
project due to lack of availability in the market and to suit site
environmental conditions. Shermeen
was also involved in masterplanning projects for industrial parks in
Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. As an Infrastructure Planner, her role
is to study the existing conditions of the proposed site and develop new
infrastructure plans to support the proposed industries with the necessary
utilities. The problems and opportunities encountered outside Singapore are
very diverse and gave her the opportunity to think critically to propose
feasible, cost-effective solutions that leverage on the strengths of the
specific sites. Careful planning for future industrial parks will need to
take into account extreme environmental conditions due to climate change,
non-traditional sources of power, local regulations and more. “There are many opportunities to grow for young
professionals and we need more hands onboard to tackle the challenges of
climate change, especially in the renewable energy and the built
environment,” Shermeen shared. Featuring Shermeen from Surbana Jurong Group, a
global urban, infrastructure and managed services consulting firm, with over
70 years of track record in successful project delivery. Headquartered in
Singapore, the group has a global talent pool of 16,000 across Surbana Jurong
and our member companies AETOS, Atelier Ten, B+H, KTP, Prostruct, RBG, SAA,
